}}Rohit Gurunath Sharma (born 30 April 1987) is an Indian international cricketer who is the vice-captain of the India national team in limited-overs formats.[3][4] He is a right-handed batsman and was an occasional right-arm off break bowler. He plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket and captains Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.[5]

Having started his international career at the age of 20, Sharma quickly came to be pegged by many analysts as a permanent fixture in the Indian cricket team in the next decade.[6] He made his ODI debut on 23 June 2007 against Ireland.[7] In CT 2013, he started playing as an opening batsman for India ODI team and performed consistently. He scored consecutive centuries in his first two Test matches against the West Indies in November 2013, scoring 177 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on debut, followed by a score of 111* in the next Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.[8][9] He played 108 ODIs before playing his maiden Test.[10]

On 13 November 2014, Rohit Sharma scored 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, which is the highest individual score in ODIs and second in overall limited 50 over match.[11] He has also scored 106 against South Africa in Twenty20 Internationals and became the second Indian to score a century in all three formats.[12] He also won "T20 Innings of the Year Award" by ESPNCricinfo.[13] He is also the fastest batsman to score 100(35 balls) in T-20 against Sri Lanka.[14] He then became the only player in the world to score three double hundreds in ODIs.[15] Rohit Sharma is the first skipper to lead his team to the IPL title thrice.[16] As per Forbes India 2015 Top 100 celebrities in India, Sharma is listed 8th in terms of fame, 46th in terms of income and 12th overall.[17] In November 2018, he became the first cricketer to score four centuries in T20 international cricket.[18][19]

Early life

Sharma was born on 30 April 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra. His mother Purnima Sharma is from Visakhapatnam.[20] His father Gurunath Sharma worked as a caretaker of a transport firm storehouse. Sharma was raised by his grandparents and uncles in Borivali because of his father's low income.[21] He would visit his parents, who lived in a single-room house in Dombivli,[21] only during weekends.[22] He has an elder brother, Vishal Sharma.[21]

Sharma joined a cricket camp in 1999 with his uncle's money. His coach at the camp was Dinesh Lad who asked him to change his school to Swami Vivekanand International School, where Lad was the coach and which had better cricket facilities. Sharma recollects, "I told him I couldn't afford it, but he got me a scholarship. So for four years I didn't pay a penny, and did well in my cricket."[22] Sharma started as an off-spinner who could bat a bit before Lad noticed Sharma's batting abilities and promoted him from number eight to open the innings. He excelled in the Harris and Giles Shield school cricket tournaments, scoring a century on debut as an opener.[23]

Youth and domestic career

Rohit Sharma made his List A debut for West Zone against Central Zone in the Deodhar Trophy in March 2005;, at Gwalior.[24] It was his unbeaten innings of 142 in 123 balls against North Zone at Udaipur in the same tournament,[25] that brought him into the limelight.[26] Performances for the India A sides in Abu Dhabi and Australia followed, leading to him being selected for the 30 member probables list for the Champions Trophy,[26] although he did not make the final squad. This was before he had made his Ranji Trophy debut.[26] He was also selected for the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy.

Sharma made his First-class debut for India A against New Zealand A, at Darwin in July 2006.[27] He made his Ranji Trophy debut for his First-class side Mumbai in the 2006/2007 season. Though he was unable to contribute much in the initial matches,[28] he scored 205 off 267 balls in the match against Gujarat.[28] Mumbai went on to win the tournament with Sharma scoring a half-century in the final against Bengal.[29]

In October 2013, upon the retirement of Ajit Agarkar, and owing to a successful captaincy stint in the IPL for Mumbai Indians, where he helped to win the IPL as well as the Champions League T20, Sharma was appointed as the captain of the Mumbai Ranji team for the 2013–14 season.[30]

International career

Early years

Rohit Sharma was first selected for the limited-overs matches on India's tour to Ireland in 2007. He made his One Day International debut against Ireland at Belfast, although he did not bat in the match.[31]

Rohit Sharma eventually made his mark on the international stage on 20 September 2007, when he led India to victory by scoring an unbeaten 50 (which came off 40 deliveries) against South Africa in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20.[32] The win reserved India a berth in the semifinals of the tournament. At one stage India were 61–4, but his partnership of 85 runs with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni helped India to post a total of 153/5.[32] He was eventually declared Man of the Match.[32] Sharma then proceeded to score 30 runs off 16 balls in the final against Pakistan.[33]

Rise in the career

Rohit Sharma scored his maiden ODI half-century against Pakistan, at Jaipur on 18 November 2007.[34] and was selected as part of India's 16-man squad for the 2007–08 Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia.[35] Here, he scored 235 runs at an average of 33.57 with 2 fifties,[36] including his score of 66 in the 1st final at Sydney[37] partnering Sachin Tendulkar for most of India's successful run chase.

However, his ODI performances suffered a downturn after this and his middle-order position was taken over by Suresh Raina, and eventually, Virat Kohli took his position as the reserve batsman.[38]

In December 2009, he scored a triple century in the Ranji Trophy[39] and was recalled to the ODI team for the tri-nations tournament in Bangladesh as Tendulkar opted to rest in the series.[40] However, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina were selected ahead of him in the playing eleven, and he did not play in any of India's five matches.

Rohit Sharma was called to the Indian Test team in February 2010[41] as the only reserve batsman. When V. V. S. Laxman failed to recover from an injury, Sharma was set to make his debut but injured himself playing football in the warm-up on the first morning of the match. It was too late to bring in a replacement batsman, so the reserve wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha had to play as a specialist batsman. Since then Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli overtook him and made their Test debuts in the middle order.

He scored his maiden ODI century (114) against Zimbabwe on 28 May 2010 and followed it up with another century in the next match of the tri-series against Sri Lanka on 30 May 2010 by scoring 101 not out.[42][43]

Following the poor form in South Africa series held just before the World Cup, he was dropped from the Indian squad for 2011 World Cup.[44]

He was selected for the West Indies tour of 2011 after the IPL in a squad where senior batsmen such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and skipper MS Dhoni were rested, and Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir were out to injuries.[45] The side was captained by Suresh Raina with Harbhajan Singh as his deputy. He contributed 26 off 23 balls with two sixes in the only T20I at Queen's Park Oval and strung a 71-run partnership with Subramaniam Badrinath leading to an Indian victory.[46]

In the ODI series that followed, he carried on with his good form. The first ODI was also played at Queen's Park Oval. Rohit was elected the man of the match for his 68 not out off 75 balls with three fours and a six.[47] In the third ODI played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua; Sharma scored a matching-winning 86 off 91 balls. Rohit along with Harbhajan Singh got India out of trouble to win the match after they were reduced to 92 for 6.[48] He was widely appraised for his calm and matured performance. Sharma won his first Man of the Series award for excellent batting performance throughout the ODI series.[49]

His good form continued as he bagged another Man of the series award against West Indies again but this time on Indian soil.[50]

Sharma was part of the squad selected to play in the Australian series.

Decline phase of career

Then, in a hitherto unprecedented sequence, he scored only 13 runs on the Sri Lanka tour in July 2012. In the entire 2012, he scored just 168 runs at an average of 12.92 with only one fifty. But despite all this, Dhoni showed faith in him. In 2013 the victory of IPL with the Mumbai Indians and was a major turnaround that paved the way for the rise again. In the same year Rohit was given the opportunity to open the innings for India during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.[51]

2013 ICC Champions Trophy

{{Main|2013 ICC Champions Trophy}}

In 2013, he was promoted as the new opening batsman for India along with Shikhar Dhawan for the Champions Trophy.[52] The successful starts achieved by this opening pair helped India win the Champions Trophy and Tri-nation series in the West Indies. His good form continued in the home series against Australia when he scored a 141 not out in Jaipur and 209 runs off 158 balls, in Bangalore and with 16 sixes, he broke the world record for most sixes hit in an ODI innings.

Rise through the ranks

Test debut

{{Quote box |width=33% |align=right |quoted=1 |quote=I know he is a determined young man and he works hard at his game and if he keeps working as hard as he does with the talent that he has, then I think he can actually become a very good Test player for India|source=— Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting on Rohit[53]}}

In November 2013, during Sachin Tendulkar's farewell Test series, Sharma made his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against the West Indies. He scored a 177 which was the second-best score on debut by an Indian behind Shikhar Dhawan. Sharma became one of the few Indian players to have scored a century on their Test debut. He followed it up with a 111 not out at his home ground at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai becoming the third Indian cricketer to score back-to-back centuries in the first two tests—a feat which was achieved by Sourav Ganguly in 1996 in England and Mohammad Azharuddin in 1984, who scored centuries in his first three tests.

(Note: About Rohit's highest score 264 in ODI's)}}

In 2014, he became the first person to score more than 250 runs in a single One-Day international cricket match. He scored 264 against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. With this innings, he became the first player to score two double hundreds in ODIs. His innings of 264 is the highest score by a batsman in an ODI, surpassing 219 by Virender Sehwag.[55][56][57]

On 2 October 2015, in South Africa's tour of India, Sharma scored 106 in the first T20I at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala. With that, he became the second Indian cricketer to have scored centuries in all formats of the game. On 11 October, in the first ODI of the tour, he scored 150 off 133 balls, in a losing cause while chasing South Africa's total of 303. In the 2015–16 tour of Australia, he scored two consecutive hundreds in the ODI series and a 99 in the final game.[58] Having scored 441 runs in five games, he was the top-scorer and was named the Man-of-the-Series.[59]

On 13 December 2017 in Mohali in India, Rohit Sharma hit his third double century of 208 runs, not out, as the captain. This was also special to him because he achieved it on his wedding anniversary.

On 22 December 2017, Sharma equalled the world record by scoring the joint-fastest century off 35 balls in Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka at Holkar Stadium, Indore.[61] His ODI stats improved dramatically since moving up to an opener in ODIs.[62]

On 8 July 2018, during the T20I series against England Rohit Sharma became only the second batsman and first Indian to reach 3 T20I centuries after Colin Munro and also equalled the record of Munro for scoring most number of tons in T20I matches.(3)[63] After achieving his third T20I century, he too created a unique record for becoming the only batsman to have scored 3 ODI double centuries and 3 T20I centuries.[64] He also became the first batsman to score 3 centuries each in all three forms of international cricket.[65][66] Rohit Sharma also equalled the record of Virat Kohli for recording most number of scores in excess of 50 in T20Is.[67] Rohit also became the fifth overall and second Indian batsman to cross 2000 runs in T20I cricket.[68][69] He also became the joint second fastest batsman along with Brendon McCullum to reach 2000 T20I runs in terms of number of balls faced.(1476)[70] After scoring his third T20I hundred, he also became the first Indian to score 5 T20 centuries and shattered the record of Virat Kohli for scoring most number of centuries in across all T20 matches by an Indian batsman.[71]

In December 2017, India captain Virat Kohli was rested for the ODIs and T20I against Sri Lanka, in preparation for India's tour to South Africa, which began in the first week of January 2018. As a result, Rohit was named the Indian captain for the first time in his career.[76][77] India won the ODI series 2–1, their eighth consecutive series win since beating Zimbabwe in June 2016.[78] India won the T20I series 3–0.[79] Rohit Sharma was selected to lead India for the Nidahas Trophy in March 2018 as Virat Kohli was resting.[80] Rohit Sharma again lead India in the 2018 Asia Cup after Virat Kohli was rested after a rigorous tour of England. India won the tournament after wining the final against Bangladesh. Rohit lead India to defeat West Indies in the T20I series.[81]

In the 2nd match Rohit smashed an unbeaten 111 off just 61 balls to power India to 195 for two and became the first cricketer to score four centuries in T20Is and was also awarded the Player of the Match.[83] India won the T20I series 3–0.[84]

Tour of Australia 2018-19

{{Main|Indian cricket team in Australia in 2018–19}}

Rohit didn't have a blistering start to this tour as he managed just 29 runs in 2 innings in the T20Is.[85][86]

He had earned a test recall earlier in the month with chief selector MSK Prasad stating the reason for his recall that his natural game suits for the bouncy Australian pitches.[87] Rohit played in the first test in Adelaide, which was his first test appearance since featuring in the test series in South Africa. He didn't have a dream return to the Test side with scores of 37 and 1 in two innings, although his contribution in the first innings was instrumental to build the innings after the top order failed and eventually India ended up winning the test match to take a 1-0 lead in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.[88][89] During the game, he picked a minor injury which saw him miss the second test in Perth.[90] He recovered for the Boxing Day test at the MCG and subsequently made his way to playing 11. He scored a gritty fifty (63*) to help India post a mammoth total of 443/7 as India went on to win the test, hence taking a 2-1 lead and retained the trophy.[91] After the third test, Rohit had to return to India due to the birth of his daughter. The BCCI confirmed his departure and also stated

that he would be back for the following ODI series.[92] India eventually won the series, hence completing a historic test series victory in Australia.[93]

On 12 January 2019, in the first ODI against Australia at the SCG, he scored his 5th hundred in Australia, which made him the first Indian to score 5 ODI hundreds on Australian soil. Overall it was also his 22nd ODI hundred and became the joint third highest century getter for India alongside Sourav Ganguly.[94] Rohit Sharma brought up 8000 runs in ODI cricket in the 5th ODI against Australia at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi. He became the joint fastest (200 innings) to the landmark along with former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.[95]

Indian Premier League

Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful players in Indian Premier League (IPL) and has the unique record of finishing the match by scoring a last-ball six.[96] He has one century and a hat-trick to his name. He is also one of the few players to score more than 4000 runs in the IPL.[97]

Sharma was signed up by the Deccan Chargers franchise for a sum of US$750,000 a year in 2008.[98] He was one of the leading run scorers in the 2008 IPL season with 404 runs at an average of 36.72.[99] He also held the coveted Orange Cap for a brief period.

In the 2009 season, he was appointed as the vice-captain of the Deccan Chargers. In a match against Kolkata Knight Riders where 21 was required off the last over, Sharma scored 26 off the over from Mashrafe Mortaza to seal a win. He was the fifth bowler to take an IPL hat-trick[108]

In the 2011 auction, he was sold for US$2 million to the Mumbai Indians.[100]

Rohit scored his first IPL century against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, getting 109* in 60 balls.[101] He was also declared the Man of the Match.[102]

In 2013, Rohit was promoted as the permanent captain of the Mumbai Indians , as Ricky Ponting was benched due to poor form.[103] Mumbai Indians won the IPL title for the first time, under his captaincy.[104] It was a terrific season for him as a captain as his team went on to win the Champions League T20 as well.[105]

In 2015, he led Mumbai Indians to win the IPL title yet again by beating Chennai Super Kings with a margin of 41 runs in the final. He also won the Man of The Match award in the finals.[106][107]

In 2017, the Mumbai Indians finished at the top of the table and also went on to win the final under his captaincy.[108] He is one of the two skippers to lead his team to win the IPL three times, the other being MS Dhoni who led Chennai Super Kings to victory in the 2018 IPL final.[109][110]

Rohit Sharma had a poor 2018 where he scored 286 runs in 14 innings (avg 23.83, SR 133).[111] Poor form compounded with lackluster captaincy over the season saw the Mumbai Indians crashing out against Delhi in a must win match.[112] Unable to qualify for the playoffs, they were not able to defend their fourth title.

Playing Style

Rohit Sharma is an aggressive batsman and attack oriented mixed with style and elegance.[113][114] Due to this reason, he got the nickname "Hitman". He got this nickname when he scored his 3rd double century (208* in 153 balls) in One-day Internationals against Sri Lanka in 2017.[115] He is usually an opening Batsman in limited-overs formats,[116] but played most of his Test cricket as a middle-order batsman.[117] Rohit has a flourishing one-day and T20 career, but yet to prove in the Test career.He is known for his unique punch style of hitting the ball over square.[118]

{{Quote box |width=33% |align=right|quoted=1 |quote=India's skipper Rohit Sharma is doing the Clive Lloyd thing by hiding his emotions as he smiles and turns back to his fielding position. This does not put any pressure on the person who dropped the catch or misfield and makes him want to give an extra effort|salign=right |source=— Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit.[119]}}

Rohit is regarded as the best limited-overs batsmen in the world, especially as an opening batsman.[120]

Sunil Gavaskar one of the greatest batsman of all time, considered Rohit Sharma to have a batting style similar to Virendra Sehwag and Viv Richards. In his column for The Times of India, Gavaskar said, "The standout performer in both the limited overs series and the T20 series has been Rohit Sharma. Like Virender Sehwag before him, he is unstoppable once he gets going and like Viru he has an appetite for big hundreds. When Viru used to get out looking to hit another delivery out of the park, there used to be consternation around the ground, just like it is when Rohit gets out to a seemingly casual shot".If Rohit can turn his white ball exploits into red ball cricket, he will be the most destructive batsman in the world after Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag.[121][122]

South African legendary Herschelle Gibbs said They ["Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma"] have taken the cricket to another level. But as far as talent and technique is concerned, I think Rohit is little bit better than Virat.[123]

Rohit Sharma is regarded as one of the classiest batsmen ever. In the age of slam-bang cricket, he is one of the few who relies on the 'touch' and 'placement' as against the brute force employed by other players.[124] Rohit Sharma is famous for his Front-foot pull shot.[125] He got almost 60-70% of the runs in his career through the Front-foot.[126]

While Rohit is not a regular bowler, he can bowl right arm off spin.[127] Rohit is rated as one of the best fielders in the world. He usually fielded in the slips, cover and silly point.[128]

After getting in touch with WWF I learnt that 82% of the world’s rhinos reside in India and I am honoured to be WWF-India’s rhino ambassador to spread awareness and do my bit to contribute to the protection and survival of the rhino and help make this world a better place for them".[207]
