In the sparsely populated high desert of southeastern Oregon, Rome is immediately west of the Owyhee River on U.S. Route 95, approximately {{convert|12|mi|km|0}} northeast of Burns Junction.[2] Jordan Creek enters the river slightly downstream of Rome.[2] The elevation of Rome is {{convert|3390|ft|0}} above sea level.[1] NameAccording to Oregon Geographic Names, Rome was named by William F. Stine for the nearby geologic formations that suggested the ruined temples of Rome, Italy.[3] The {{convert|100|ft|m|adj=on}}-high Rome Cliffs,[4] or "Pillars of Rome" are formations of fossil-bearing clay, measuring about {{convert|5|mi|km|0}} long and {{convert|2|mi|km|0}} wide.[5] Post officesRome's former post office was established in 1909. Leonard R. Duncan was the first postmaster.[3] Postal service is now out of Jordan Valley. In the mid-19th century, there was another Oregon community named Rome. It was in Marion County, near Woodburn, and had a post office in 1851–52.[3] TransportationRome State Airport is near Rome.[2] In addition to U.S. Route 95, several high-desert roads converge at or near Rome. These include the Old Idaho–Oregon–Nevada Highway, Rome Road, Skull Creek Road, and Indian Fort Creek Road.[2]ClimateRome has a steppe climate (BSk) according to the Köppen climate classification system. {{Weather box|location = Rome |single line = Y | Jan record high F = 67 | Feb record high F = 71 | Mar record high F = 80 | Apr record high F = 91 | May record high F = 100 | Jun record high F = 105 | Jul record high F = 110 | Aug record high F = 107 | Sep record high F = 105 | Oct record high F = 96 | Nov record high F = 78 | Dec record high F = 65 | year record high F = 110 | Jan high F = 40.5 | Feb high F = 47.6 | Mar high F = 55.5 | Apr high F = 63.3 | May high F = 73.2 | Jun high F = 81.9 | Jul high F = 92.7 | Aug high F = 90.7 | Sep high F = 81.3 | Oct high F = 68 | Nov high F = 51.5 | Dec high F = 40.7 | year high F = 65.6 | Jan low F = 18.8 | Feb low F = 23.1 | Mar low F = 26.3 | Apr low F = 30.7 | May low F = 39.1 | Jun low F = 45.9 | Jul low F = 51.5 | Aug low F = 48.3 | Sep low F = 39 | Oct low F = 30.4 | Nov low F = 23.6 | Dec low F = 18.4 | year low F = 32.9 | Jan record low F = -31 | Feb record low F = -17 | Mar record low F = -4 | Apr record low F = 9 | May record low F = 14 | Jun record low F = 27 | Jul record low F = 28 | Aug record low F = 28 | Sep record low F = 15 | Oct record low F = -2 | Nov record low F = -11 | Dec record low F = -26 | year record low F = -27 | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation inch = 0.74 | Feb precipitation inch = 0.52 | Mar precipitation inch = 0.73 | Apr precipitation inch = 0.83 | May precipitation inch = 1.21 | Jun precipitation inch = 1.09 | Jul precipitation inch = 0.33 | Aug precipitation inch = 0.34 | Sep precipitation inch = 0.42 | Oct precipitation inch = 0.61 | Nov precipitation inch = 0.7 | Dec precipitation inch = 0.78 | year precipitation inch = 8.3 | Jan precipitation days = 6 | Feb precipitation days = 5 | Mar precipitation days = 6 | Apr precipitation days = 6 | May precipitation days = 6 | Jun precipitation days = 6 | Jul precipitation days = 2 | Aug precipitation days = 2 | Sep precipitation days = 2 | Oct precipitation days = 4 | Nov precipitation days = 6 | Dec precipitation days = 6 | Jan snow inch = 3 | Feb snow inch = 0.5 | Mar snow inch = 0.8 | Apr snow inch = 0.3 | May snow inch = 0.1 | Jun snow inch = 0 | Jul snow inch = 0 | Aug snow inch = 0 | Sep snow inch = 0 | Oct snow inch = 0.1 | Nov snow inch = 0.8 | Dec snow inch = 2.3 | year snow inch = 8 |source 1 = [6] |date=November 2015 }}{{clear}}{{clear}} References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite web | work = Geographic Names Information System| publisher = United States Geological Survey | date =November 28, 1980| url ={{Gnis3|1126268}}| title = Rome| accessdate =February 3, 2017}} 2. ^1 2 3 {{cite book |title= Oregon Atlas & Gazetteer |edition= 7th |year= 2008 |publisher= DeLorme |location= Yarmouth, Maine |isbn= 0-89933-347-8 |page=87}} 3. ^1 2 {{Cite OGN|7th|page=823}} 4. ^{{cite web | work = Geographic Names Information System| publisher = United States Geological Survey | date =November 28, 1980| url ={{Gnis3|1126269}}| title = Rome Cliffs| accessdate =February 3, 2017}} 5. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.traveloregon.com/Explore%20Oregon/Eastern%20Oregon/Attractions/Outdoors%20and%20Nature/Pillars%20of%20Rome.aspx |title= Pillars of Rome |publisher= Travel Oregon |accessdate= July 20, 2010}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/cliMAIN.pl?or7310 |title=Rome 2 NW, OR (357310) |accessdate=November 26, 2015 |publisher=Western Regional Climate Center }} External links
