News directorIn 1974, Kershaw was hired by WBAL-TV in Baltimore to shore up its sagging news ratings. He introduced the Action News format, hired new talent, and moved the station from last to first in less than a year. Sue Simmons and Spencer Christian were among Kershaw's protégés. Kershaw moved on to WNBC-TV in New York, where he collaborated with Peter Sang in bringing the "control room" set into TV news.[2] Kershaw was also mentor to Bucky Gunts,[3] who worked for Kershaw in Baltimore and Chicago. Personal life and deathWhile in Houston, Kershaw had been dating Jessica Savitch, a news reporter with a rival television station in Texas. They were engaged to be married when Kershaw died of pancreatic and liver cancer on July 3, 1988 at age 44.[6][7] Kershaw is survived by his son, Beau Kershaw, a photojournalist at Kershaw's old station, WBAL-TV in Baltimore.[8][9][10] References1. ^[https://books.google.com/books?id=nSWawtYzZEUC&pg=PA80&lpg=PA80&dq=ron+kershaw+news+director&source=web&ots=g6tUzeWgIw&sig=vFxSUz2Eytb0INZFNhgps2mvD4o books.google.com] {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Kershaw, Ron}}2. ^News 4 New York 3. ^movies2.nytimes.com 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.drbilllong.com/CurrentEventsVIII/Savitch.html |title=The Story of Jessica Savitch |last=Nash |first=Alanna |work=Review by Bill Long |publisher=Bill Long |accessdate=2008-05-13 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080101031124/http://www.drbilllong.com/CurrentEventsVIII/Savitch.html |archivedate=2008-01-01 |df= }} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112327/|title=Almost Golden|publisher=International Movie Data Base|accessdate=2008-05-13}} 6. ^giselle.com 7. ^encyclopedia.com 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.capitalemmys.tv/_pdfs/2006_Emmy_Nominations.pdf |title=2006 Emmy Award Nominations |year=2006 |publisher=National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences |accessdate=2008-05-13 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070927185044/http://www.capitalemmys.tv/_pdfs/2006_Emmy_Nominations.pdf |archivedate=2007-09-27 |df= }} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:UKGvTrjQMTIJ:www.capitalemmys.tv/documents/2007_Emmy_Nominations.doc+Beau+Kershaw&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us|title=2007 Emmy Award Nominations|year=2007|publisher=National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences|accessdate=2008-05-13}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.spj.org/mdpro/2005award-winners.htm |title=2005 Award Winners |publisher=Society of Professional Journalist-Maryland |accessdate=2008-05-13 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110207041127/http://www.spj.org/mdpro/2005award-winners.htm |archivedate=2011-02-07 |df= }} 5 : American television journalists|1945 births|1989 deaths|Deaths from cancer|American male journalists |
