S1000 Class submarines are a joint development by Russia and Italy. It is said to be an advanced version of the Amur-class submarine of Rubin Design Bureau. The Joint development is between Rubin Design Bureau of Russia and Fincantieri of Italy. HistoryIt was reported in 2005 that Fincantieri of Italy had entered into a partnership with Russia's Rubin Design Bureau to design a new diesel-electric submarine based on the Russian Amur class submarine and featuring AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) technology. In October 2006 at the Euronaval international arms show in France, Russia and Italy presented a mock-up model of a new-generation diesel submarine called S1000.[1] In July 2014 it was reported[2] that Fincantieri requested indefinite postponement of the project, citing political situation resulting from Russia's involvement in Ukraine crisis. DesignThe submarine is designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare, reconnaissance missions, and transportation of up to 12 troops. It is 56.2 meters long, has a top speed of 14 knots and is equipped with a new fuel cell-powered Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system developed by an Italian firm. Designed primarily for exports to third countries, the new submarine will feature an impressive array of weaponry, including Italian heavyweight, wire-guided Black Shark torpedoes and the Russian Club-S cruise missile system capable of hitting underwater, surface and land targets.[1] ExportsBoth Fincantieri and Rubin gave a joint presentation to the Indian Navy offering to build 6 S1000 boats for $8.1 billion[3] for Indian Navy's Project 75I-class submarine programme [4] The other contenders for the project include the Scorpène class submarine of France, the Type 214 submarine of Germany and the Amur class submarine itself from Russia.[5][6] See also
