Salkhit ({{lang-mn|Салхит}}, "windy") is a settlement in Khongor sum (district) of Darkhan-Uul Province in northern Mongolia.

Geography

Salkhit is placed on Kharaa gol river (a right tributary of the Orkhon river), 13 km South from Khongor sum center and 33 km South from the aimag capital Darkhan.

Economy

Salkhit is the railway station where the 164 km long line Salkhit - Erdenet starts. This line was built in 1975 with the Soviet assistance to the copper producing city of Erdenet.

Clean Energy, a unit of Newcom Group built the US$122 million "Salkhit Wind Farm" in the region using GE wind turbines.^[1]

Prehistory

An archaic Homo sapiens skullcap with archaic features was found near Salkhit in 2006 during mining operations. Original estimates dated the skullcap to about 22,100 years old, but later re-dating in 2010 indicated 23,630 BP and again in 2019 produced an even earlier date range of 34,950-33,900 BP.

^[2]^[3]^[4] Despite it's archaic features, genetic reconstruction indicates the specimen fits a living Asian population of modern humans possessing haplogroup N mtDNA.
