"Acts of Sacrifice" is an episode from the second season of the science-fiction television series Babylon 5.

Entertainment and news website Geek.com included Acts of Sacrifice as "essential watching" for season two.[1] Reviewer Graham Templeton wrote that "This isn't actually crucial in any way, but to me it's one of the most quintessential B5 episodes of all. War, emotion, and multiple political battles fought in and out of the diplomatic arena. This is the sort of television which simply does not exist anywhere else."[1]

Synopsis

G'Kar shows evidence of the Centauri attacking Narn civilian outposts to sway Sheridan to get Earth's government to assist in Narn war effort. Sheridan does plea to his superiors but told officially Earth cannot become involved. Meanwhile, Mollari finds himself distant from any of his former friends due to how they view his government's decisions to engage in the war. He tries to regain Garibaldi's friendship by paying him the money that Garibaldi lent him to cover gambling debts, but this doesn't sway Garibaldi immediately.

The war causes conflicts between the Narn and Centauri residents on the station. Security forces arrive to break up a scuffle between a group of Centauri and Narn, and Zac is forced to shoot one Narn which kills him. Sheridan meets with G'Kar in private, keeping the news of the death a secret and hoping for G'Kar to convince his people to not seek revenge. G'Kar speaks to the Narn and relays Sheridan's request and tells them they should follow it, but once G'Kar leaves, the group bring in the lead Centauri that had led the scuffle, and murder him. Meanwhile, Na'toth keeps an eye on the Narns and finds them buying black market weapons. She reports this to G'Kar, who goes to the Narn again and asserts his dominance. The group, however, wants to continue to fight the Centauri. G'Kar engages in a fight with the leader of the group, knocking him out but not after taking a slash to his back, wounding him. The Narn agree to back down on G'Kar's orders.

Sheridan discusses a plan to help Narn with Delenn and the two call for G'Kar to lay out the details. G'Kar joins them, expecting their help, but instead, all that Sheridan can do is to help shuttle civilians off Centauri-controlled worlds under the guise of Minbari food shipments, using Franklin's underground railroad approach to "smuggle" them back to Earth. Sheridan explains this is all he can do outside official support. G'Kar thanks them for their help, but after leaving the room, crying in misery that the help he expected is not coming. Later, Sheridan and Garibaldi meet with Mollari, explaining the death of the Centauri and the Narn that killed him, in captivity, and requesting him to not require the Narn for extradiction under the already-tense situation. Mollari dismisses the dead Centauri as a low-life and not worth the trouble, and agrees that the Narn can be tried on the station, as long as his possessions are trading and the currency used to support the Centauri war fund. Garibaldi meets Mollari later, where Mollari explained he opted to take no action, hoping that would make Garibaldi happy, as a step to restore their friendship. Garibaldi agrees and stays to drink with him.

Separately, Sheridan assigning Ivanova the task of showing around a newly-contacted race, the Lumati, as an exercise in her diplomacy skills. Ivanova finds that the Lumati have advanced technology, but also have a rather elitist attitude towards less-evolved species, with their leader Correlilmurzon only speaking to Ivanova through his aid Taq until she proves her value to him, criticizing Dr. Frankin's work in xeno-medicine. They ask to see Belowdeck, where the various drifters end up living, and Corelilmurzon finally speaks to Ivanova directly, believing that because humans have separately their weak from the powerful, they are very similar species, and agrees to further trade discussions. Ivanova is confused but meets with the Lumati later, learning that to seal the deal, Correlilmurzon wants to have sex with her. Shocked, she manages to reschedule a meeting for later and goes to talk to Franklin, who gives her an idea about the Lumati's lack of actual human knowledge. When Correlilmurzon arrives in her quarters, Ivanova convinces him to have sex the "human way", and once he agrees, she makes silly dances and singsong dialog, concluding that the sex was great. Ivanova's deception is successful, and the Lumati agree to continue further discussion, but she is troubled when she gets a gift from Correlilmurzon with a note that they will do it his way next time.
