Saminatal makes up to one third of the territory of Liechtenstein. It has a length of approximately 17 km (Liechtenstein: 12 km (including its source rivulets)[1], Austria: 5 km) and is the 2nd longest river of the principality. Source and CourseThe Samina comes into existence at Ölersegg (meeting point of Triesenberg, an exclave of Schaan (Brandegg) and an exclave of Balzers), where Stägerbach and Valorschbach merge. They flow from south to north through the eastern part of Liechtenstein, the Saminatal, and then cross the border to Austria. In the community aera of Frastanz the river merges with the Ill. UseThe water is intensively used for electricity production as well as for drinking water supply for the communities of Liechtenstein. The Samina possesses A to B grade quality and sportsmen value the river for rafting. LiechtensteinIn general the Saminatal is not very populated or exploited, therefor its wildlife is almost untouched. Many endangered animals and plantes exist there.[2] There is one hydro-electric power station at Samina, which form 2011 to 2015 was transformed into a pumped-storage power station.[3][4][5] The pump-storage reservoir has to always leave some water to the river, the amounts fixed by the Liechtenstein Gewässerschutzgesetz. There were measures taken ecologically enhance the conditions of the river.[5][6] Nonetheless there is critique form ecologists, that these amounts are by far not enough to protect the wildlife in the river.[7][8] AustiraAt the lower course the E-Werke Frastanz have three power plants.[9] The Austrian part of Samina is a popular destination for rafting. In the middle part of the valley, around the border of Liechtenstein and Austria, there is the European Union nature proteciton area Spirkenwälder Saminatal.[10] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.liechtenstein.li/land-und-leute/geografie/gewaesser/|title=Gewässer, Fluss, See, Bach – Fürstentum Liechtenstein|website=www.liechtenstein.li|access-date=2019-03-19}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Samina (River)}}2. ^https://lgu.li/publikationen/liewo-seiten-1/liewo-11-10-saminatal-laserdruck.pdf 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.volksblatt.li/multimedia/videos/92318/psw-samina-eroffnet?von=01062015&src=vb|title=PSW Samina eröffnet - Liechtensteiner Volksblatt, die Tageszeitung für Liechtenstein|website=Liechtensteiner Volksblatt|language=de-DE|access-date=2019-03-19}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.volksblatt.li/multimedia/fotos/92283/kraftwerk-samina-eroffnet?von=01062015&src=vb|title=Kraftwerk Samina eröffnet - Liechtensteiner Volksblatt, die Tageszeitung für Liechtenstein|website=Liechtensteiner Volksblatt|language=de-DE|access-date=2019-03-19}} 5. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.lkw.li/unternehmen/kraftwerke/wasserkraftwerk-samina.html|title=LKW - Wasserkraftwerk Samina|website=www.lkw.li|access-date=2019-03-19}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.ee-news.ch/de/article/25751/liechtenstein-mehr-wasser-in-der-samina|title=Liechtenstein: Mehr Wasser in der Samina (ee-news.ch)|website=www.ee-news.ch|access-date=2019-03-19}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.andrea-matt.li/restwasser_samina.html|title=Wasserkraft und Ökostrom|website=www.andrea-matt.li|access-date=2019-03-19}} 8. ^https://lgu.li/publikationen/liewo-seiten-1/liewo-restwasser-laserdruck.pdf 9. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.ewerke.at/erneuerbare-energie/|title=Erneuerbare Energie|website=E-Werke Frastanz|language=de-DE|access-date=2019-03-19}} 10. ^{{Cite web|url=https://naturvielfalt.at/schutzgebiet/spirkenwaelder/|title=Spirkenwälder|website=Naturvielfalt|language=de-DE|access-date=2019-03-19}} 3 : Rivers of Liechtenstein|Rivers of Vorarlberg|International rivers of Europe |
