The municipality has an area of 2,969.79 square kilometers (9.50% of the state's surface), making it the biggest municipality in terms of size. It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Ocampo, to the south by the municipalities of León and Guanajuato, to the southeast by the municipality of Dolores Hidalgo and to the east by the municipality of San Diego de la Unión. It borders to the north with the state of San Luis Potosí and to the west with the state of Jalisco. The municipality had 106,952 inhabitants as of 2010.[2] HistorySan Felipe was founded by Francisco de Velasco on January 21, 1562, by orders of viceroy Luis de Velasco. The city was founded with the name of San Felipe in honor of King Phillip II of Spain. In 1889 the name of the city was changed to "Ciudad González" in honor of the then governor of Guanajuato, Manuel González. The name of the city was again changed in 1938, this time to "Ciudad Hernández Álvarez", after governor Enrique Herández Álvarez. In 1948 the city's name was reverted to the original name of "San Felipe". Regardless of the several official names the city was given through time, it was always colloquially known as "San Felipe Torres Mochas" (lit. "San Felipe stub-towers"), a nickname that persists to this day.[3] Climate{{Weather box |location = San Felipe |metric first = yes |single line = Yes |temperature colour = pastel |Jan record high C = 27.0 |Feb record high C = 28.0 |Mar record high C = 32.5 |Apr record high C = 36.5 |May record high C = 37.0 |Jun record high C = 37.5 |Jul record high C = 31.0 |Aug record high C = 31.0 |Sep record high C = 31.5 |Oct record high C = 38.0 |Nov record high C = 39.5 |Dec record high C = 29.0 |Jan high C = 20.8 |Feb high C = 22.3 |Mar high C = 25.7 |Apr high C = 27.8 |May high C = 28.7 |Jun high C = 26.6 |Jul high C = 24.3 |Aug high C = 24.8 |Sep high C = 24.0 |Oct high C = 23.4 |Nov high C = 23.0 |Dec high C = 21.0 |year high C = 24.4 |Jan mean C = 11.9 |Feb mean C = 13.2 |Mar mean C = 16.2 |Apr mean C = 18.4 |May mean C = 19.8 |Jun mean C = 19.1 |Jul mean C = 17.9 |Aug mean C = 18.1 |Sep mean C = 17.5 |Oct mean C = 15.8 |Nov mean C = 14.4 |Dec mean C = 12.6 |year mean C = 16.2 |Jan low C = 3.0 |Feb low C = 4.0 |Mar low C = 6.6 |Apr low C = 9.0 |May low C = 10.9 |Jun low C = 11.6 |Jul low C = 11.4 |Aug low C = 11.4 |Sep low C = 10.9 |Oct low C = 8.3 |Nov low C = 5.7 |Dec low C = 4.1 |year low C = 8.1 |Jan record low C = -6.5 |Feb record low C = -8.0 |Mar record low C = -3.0 |Apr record low C = 0.5 |May record low C = 3.0 |Jun record low C = 4.0 |Jul record low C = 6.0 |Aug record low C = 7.0 |Sep record low C = 2.5 |Oct record low C = 0.0 |Nov record low C = -5.0 |Dec record low C = -5.5 |precipitation colour= green |Jan precipitation mm = 16.6 |Feb precipitation mm = 6.0 |Mar precipitation mm = 3.1 |Apr precipitation mm = 16.5 |May precipitation mm = 37.9 |Jun precipitation mm = 66.8 |Jul precipitation mm = 113.8 |Aug precipitation mm = 85.2 |Sep precipitation mm = 71.1 |Oct precipitation mm = 36.9 |Nov precipitation mm = 11.6 |Dec precipitation mm = 9.9 |year precipitation mm = 475.4 |unit precipitation days= 0.1 mm |Jan precipitation days = 1.4 |Feb precipitation days = 1.3 |Mar precipitation days = 1.1 |Apr precipitation days = 3.0 |May precipitation days = 5.3 |Jun precipitation days = 7.2 |Jul precipitation days = 9.8 |Aug precipitation days = 8.7 |Sep precipitation days = 7.8 |Oct precipitation days = 4.7 |Nov precipitation days = 1.8 |Dec precipitation days = 1.8 |year precipitation days= 53.9 |source 1 = Servicio Meteorologico Nacional[4] |date=August 2012 }} DemographicsAs of the census of 2010 there were 106,952 people and 22,830 households in the municipality, representing a population increase of 11,056 from the previous census in 2005.
