Of the two genera in the family, Chaunacops typically occurs at deeper depths than Chaunax, but with considerable overlap. They have large, globose bodies and short, compressed tails, and are covered with small, spiny scales. The largest are about {{convert|30|cm|in|abbr=on}} in length. The first dorsal fin ray is modified into a short bioluminescent lure which dangles forward over the mouth, which is turned upwards so as to be nearly vertical. The sensory canals of the lateral lines are especially conspicuous.[3] Chaunax have modified fins which resemble legs.[4] References1. ^{{FishBase family | family = Chaunacidae | month = February | year = 2006}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q1472882}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Sea Toad}}{{Lophiiformes-stub}}2. ^{{cite book |editor=Paxton, J.R. |editor2=Eschmeyer, W.N.|author1=Bertelsen, E. |author2=Pietsch, T.W. |lastauthoramp=yes |year=1998|title=Encyclopedia of Fishes|publisher= Academic Press|location=San Diego|pages= 140|isbn= 0-12-547665-5}} 3. ^{{cite web | url = http://tolweb.org/Chaunacidae | author = John H.
