On a Lake Victoria peninsula, approximately {{convert|37|km|mi}} southwest of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, it was once the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda prior to independence, in 1962. Entebbe is the location of Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's largest commercial and military airport, best known for the dramatic rescue of 100 hostages kidnapped by the resistance group of the PFLP-EO and Revolutionary Cells (RZ) organizations. Entebbe is also the location of State House, the official office and residence of the President of Uganda.==Etymology==The word came from Luganda language e ntebe which means 'seat' / 'chair'. Entebbe was the seat of the colonial governor in the early 1900s, when the country was a British protectorate, and is now the location of the official office and residence of the President of Uganda, hence the name. Entebbe is the seat of power in the country.==Location==Entebbe sits on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. The town is situated in Wakiso District, approximately {{convert|44|km|0}} south of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.[{{cite web|publisher=Globefeed.com |author=Globefeed.com | url=https://distancecalculator.globefeed.com/Uganda_Distance_Result.asp?vr=apes&fromplace=Central%20Kampala,%20Uganda,Uganda&toplace=Entebbe%20Town,%20Uganda,Uganda |title=Distance between Central Kampala, Uganda and Entebbe Town, Uganda |date=25 March 2019 |access-date=25 March 2019}}] 3. ^{{google maps|title=Location of Entebbe At Google Maps| access-date=2 July 2015| url=https://www.google.com/maps/place/0%C2%B003'00.0%22N+32%C2%B027'36.0%22E/@0.0514761,32.4572365,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Lugonjo never goes to sleep | url=http://www.monitor.co.ug/Magazines/HomesandProperty/Lugonjo-never-goes-sleep/689858-4777470-uowlimz/index.html |date=26 September 2018 |access-date=25 March 2019 |last=Muganga | first=Eve |newspaper=Daily Monitor |location=Kampala}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Estimated Population of Entebbe In 2002, 2010 & 2011 |publisher=Uganda Bureau of Statistics |accessdate=17 April 2014 |url=http://www.ubos.org/onlinefiles/uploads/ubos/pdf%20documents/TP52010.pdf |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140707231502/http://www.ubos.org/onlinefiles/uploads/ubos/pdf%20documents/TP52010.pdf |archivedate=7 July 2014 |df= }} 6. ^1 {{cite web| url=http://citypopulation.de/Uganda-Cities.html|title=The Population of The Regions of the Republic of Uganda And All Cities And Towns of More Than 15,000 Inhabitants| date=27 August 2014| accessdate=12 December 2015| first=|last=UBOS| publisher=Citypopulation.de Quoting Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS)}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.jhsph.edu/research/centers-and-institutes/rakai-health-sciences-program/research_services/nih_excellence_research.html|title=NIH International Center for Excellence in Research|last=|first=|date=|website=Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=14 October 2017}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.mrcuganda.org/research/research-programme/research-endemic-neglected-emerging-and-re-emerging-infections-eneri|title=Research on Endemic, Neglected, Emerging and Re-emerging infections (ENERI), MRC/UVRI|last=|first=|date=|website=MRC/UVRI|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=14 October 2017}} 9. ^{{cite web|title= UWEC Homepage|publisher=Uganda Wildlife Education Centre|url=http://www.uweczoo.org/|accessdate=18 April 2014}} 10. ^{{cite web|title= Homepage of State House Entebbe|url=http://www.statehouse.go.ug/|publisher=State House Entebbe|accessdate=18 April 2014}} 11. ^"Home."
