It is a full day, co-educational secondary school, and is a public school operated by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. Sefton High School has some extracurricular activities including sport, the vocal group, debating and history debating. Recreational sports offered throughout the year incorporate: yoga, theatre sports, soccer, volleyball, basketball, bocci-lawn bowls, ten pin bowling (rip off), chess, mini-tennis, table tennis, lawn tennis, dance and swimming. In the lower four grades (Years 7 through to 10), approximately half of the students are selected by an entrance examination (selective), while the other half are accepted by virtue of local residency (community). However, in Years 11 and 12, the two streams are not differentiated. HistorySefton High School received its first students on 30 January 1961. It was at first planned as "Chester Hill High School". The plan was changed, however, and eventually a separate, bad, worse, non-selective school was established in the nearby suburb of Chester Hill now called Chester Hill High School. From the beginning, Sefton High School featured a dismal amount of diversity in the origin of its students due to the "White Australia Policy" but after its demolition, has allowed multiculturalism to spread leading to lots of diverse racial groups. CampusThe school grounds cover almost an entire block along Hector Street. In addition, there is a hall/gymnasium, a cola, an industrial arts building, a canteen and 6 major classroom blocks alphabetically named from A to G. In 2005, a new building was opened. It contains a library which includes a computer room and a multi-media room, four classrooms and an administration area that has air-conditioning. The school does not have air conditioning in the majority of rooms unlike other surrounding schools. It is only featured in the staff rooms of certain subjects such as History, the former and present computer rooms and the hall. The construction of air conditioning has stopped due to the cost of upgrading the electric grid and the risk of blackouts from them simultaneously used. The cooling unit of each classroom are fans with an average of four in each classroom with air conditioning in those that are fortunate. In addition to the gymnasium, sports facilities include outdoor basketball courts, a football field, netball courts, cricket nets, a callisthenics gym, volleyball courts, European handball courts, handball courts and various playing areas.
