It is located around Sepanggar Bay which houses the Sepanggar Bay Container Terminal, a major naval base for the Royal Malaysian Navy as well as the Sepanggar Bay Oil Terminal. The main campus for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Universiti Teknologi MARA Sabah, Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic and Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), are situated here. Sepanggar is also a parliamentary constituency (P.171) and is currently represented by Jumat Idris of Barisan Nasional. The constituency is further divided into the two state legislative assembly constituencies of Karambunai (N.12) and Inanam (N.13). The name Sepanggar is sometimes spelled Sepangar or Sapangar. Features and developmentSepanggar is currently experiencing a surge in development due to the expansion of Kota Kinabalu. The recently completed Sepanggar Container Port Terminal has taken over all container handling operations from Kota Kinabalu Port. This port was built to complement and help ease the congestion currently experienced at Kota Kinabalu Port.[1] Besides this, various completed and non-completed projects for residential and commercial purposes have sprouted around Sepanggar; in line with the government's plan to turn Sepanggar into another urban centre or suburb, part of the greater metropolitan area of Kota Kinabalu.[2] The construction of the 1Borneo Hypermall, which is the largest shopping mall in East Malaysia, and possibly in the whole of Borneo along Jalan Sulaman is opened since 8 June 2008.[3] The Royal Malaysian Navy is also currently constructing a submarine base here, which is to become the Navy's first and principal base throughout Malaysia. On 18 November 2017, the 600 metre long double-track Sepanggar Tunnel has opened and the tunnel has two lanes connecting Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) with Sepanggar Container Port and several surrounding areas.[4][5] References1. ^"Sapangar Container Port Terminal ready" {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130513021016/http://dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=43646 |date=13 May 2013 }}, Daily Express News. 8 August 2006 2. ^"Rapid Survey of Development Opportunities & Constraints (Doc) for Kota Kinabalu" {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070930055300/http://www.iczm.sabah.gov.my/ICZM%20in%20Sabah/Districts/WestCoast/DOCSurvey/mst-1.html |date=30 September 2007 }}, Sabah Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). 1 February 1999 3. ^News articles about the mall opening {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081206042511/http://www.1borneo.net/news/details.asp?newsid=98 |date=6 December 2008 }} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.sayangsabah.com/terowong-sepanggar-dilancar-lonjak-operasi-kawasan-industri/|title=Terowong Sepanggar Dilancar, Lonjak Operasi Kawasan Industri|author=Roshan|work=Bernama|language=Malay|publisher=Sayang Sabah|date=14 November 2017|accessdate=28 November 2017}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.sayangsabah.com/terowong-sepanggar-mula-dibuka-18-november-ini/|title=Terowong Sepanggar mula dibuka 18 November ini|author=Leolerry Lajius|language=Malay|publisher=Sayang Sabah|date=14 November 2017|accessdate=28 November 2017}} External links
