It lives at a depth of between 130 and 170 m.[4]S. irvingi grows to a mantle length of 100 mm.[4] The type specimens were collected off Garden Island, Cockburn Sound ({{coord|32|11|S|115|43|E|scale:250000}}), Port Royal, King George Sound ({{coord|35|03|S|117|58|E|scale:250000}}), and Warnbro Sound ({{coord|32|20|S|115|43|E|scale:250000}}) in South Africa.
