The Serrania de Macuira stands in the middle of the La Guajira Desert at {{convert|864|m|ft|abbr=on}} [1] isolated from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes. The range is a protected area; National Natural Park Macuira. The Serranía de Macuira measures around {{convert|35|km|mi}} in length and is circa {{convert|10|km|mi}} wide, at approximately {{convert|10|km|mi}} from the Caribbean sea. The range is composed of three mountain massifs that are interconnected; the highest being Cerro Paluou ({{convert|864|m|ft|abbr=on}}), Cerro de Jibome ({{convert|753|m|ft|abbr=on}}) covering a total area of {{convert|250|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}}.
