The island is approximately {{convert|2|km|mi}} long and {{convert|1|km|mi}} wide and extends to some {{convert|155|ha|acre|0|abbr=on}} in total. The island is characterised by a table topped hill at its southern end.[5] The name Shuna is probably derived from the Norse, for "sea island".[1] The island is separated from Appin by the Sound of Shuna. Shuna is recorded in a late 16th-century document as belonging to John Stewart, the Laird of Appin.[4] He may have built Castle Shuna a small tower-house, which is now in ruins lies at the south end[6] In the 18th century, Shuna Farmhouse replaced Castle Shuna as the residence on the island: it is a Category B listed traditional farmhouse dating from the 1740s.[7] Opposite Castle Shuna, at the head of Loch Laich, is the island fortress of Castle Stalker, also historically a possession of the Stewarts of Appin.[8] The island forms part of the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, one of 40 in Scotland.[9] In 2012 the island was placed on sale via agents Savills for £1.85 million.[10] {{clear left}}Footnotes1. ^1 2 Mac an Tàilleir p. 105 2. ^{{GRO10}} 3. ^{{Ordnance Survey}} 4. ^1 Haswell-Smith (2004) pp. 117-18 5. ^{{cite web| url=http://www.scottish-places.info/features/featurefirst1541.html | title=Overview of Shuna| publisher=Gazetteer for Scotland| accessdate=2007-12-12}} 6. ^{{cite web| url=http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/pls/portal/newcanmore.details_gis?inumlink=23289| title=Castle Shuna| publisher=Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland| accessdate=2007-12-12}} 7. ^{{Historic Environment Scotland|num=LB12343|desc=Shuna Farmhouse|cat=B|access-date=28 March 2019}} 8. ^{{Historic Environment Scotland|num=LB12345|desc=Castle Stalker|cat=A|access-date=28 March 2019|fewer-links=yes}} 9. ^"National Scenic Areas" {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170311014235/http://www.snh.gov.uk/protecting-scotlands-nature/protected-areas/national-designations/nsa/ |date=2017-03-11 }}.
