SynopsisThe work is based on Randall's memoirs and is an account of his time in the Solomon Islands living in the village of Mendali on Rendova Island of Western Province, encountering sharks, shipwrecks, and mosquitos. ReceptionCritical reception has been positive.[2] The Guardian reviewed the book in the months following its release, writing that Randall had a "deceptively guileless style. This allows him to negotiate the twin hazards which face the travel writer: the boiling feeding frenzy of bravado and the desolate reef of faux naivety."[3] The Washington Post praised the work, stating "At times he works a little too hard to turn on the charm, and he isn't always able to avoid the pitfalls of paternalism that await the Western traveler who ventures to faraway places with strange-sounding names, but he is rescued by a nice inclination toward self-mockery and, even more, by the fundamental decency and humanity of the people of the Solomons."[4] References1. ^{{cite news|last1=Anthony Sattin|title=Solomon Time (book review)|publisher=Sunday Times (London)|date=16 June 2002}} 2. ^{{cite news|title=The resourceful traveler.|url=https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-119341733.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160410060354/https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-119341733.html|dead-url=yes|archive-date=April 10, 2016|accessdate=13 January 2016|publisher=Chicago Tribune (subscription required)|date=April 10, 2003}} 3. ^{{Cite web|title = Observer review: Solomon Time and Ciao Asmara|url = https://www.theguardian.com/books/2002/jul/14/travel.features|website = the Guardian|access-date = 2016-01-13|first = Stephen|last = Smith}} 4. ^{{Cite web|title = One on the Isle|url = https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-239237.html|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20160911125136/https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-239237.html|dead-url = yes|archive-date = September 11, 2016|website = The Washington Post (subscription required)|access-date = 2016-01-13|date = March 27, 2003|last = Yardley|first = Jonathan}} 5 : 2002 non-fiction books|Books about Oceania|British travel books|Solomon Islands culture|Western Province (Solomon Islands) |
