It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.[2] The sooty antbird was described and illustrated by the English ornithologists Philip Sclater and Osbert Salvin in 1868 and given the binomial name Percnostola fortis.[3] The species was later included in the genus Myrmeciza. A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2013 found that Myrmeciza was polyphyletic.[4] In the resulting rearrangement to create monophyletic genera the sooty antbird was moved to the newly erected genus Hafferia.[5] References1. ^{{IUCN|id=22701841 |title=Hafferia fortis |assessor=BirdLife International |assessor-link=BirdLife International |version=2013.2 |year=2012 |accessdate=26 November 2013}} 2. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species/factsheet/22701841|title=Sooty Antbird (Myrmeciza fortis) - BirdLife species factsheet|website=www.birdlife.org|access-date=2016-05-30}} 3. ^{{ cite journal | last1=Sclater | first1=Philip L. | author-link=Philip Sclater | last2=Salvin | first2=Osbert | author2-link=Osbert Salvin | year=1867 | title=List of birds collected at Pebas, Upper Amazons, by Mr. John Hauxwell, with notes and descriptions of new species | journal=Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London | issue=3 | pages=977–981 [980] | url=https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/29534422 }} The volume is dated 1867 but the issue was published in the following year. 4. ^{{ cite journal | last1=Isler | first1=M.L. | last2=Bravo | first2=G.A. | last3= Brumfield | first3=R.T. | year=2013 | title=Taxonomic revision of Myrmeciza (Aves: Passeriformes: Thamnophilidae) into 12 genera based on phylogenetic, morphological, behavioral, and ecological data | journal=Zootaxa | volume=3717 | issue=4 | pages=469–497 | doi=10.11646/zootaxa.3717.4.3 | url= http://www.museum.lsu.edu/Bravo/Publications_files/Zootaxa%202013%20Isler.pdf }} 5. ^{{cite web| editor1-last=Gill | editor1-first=Frank | editor1-link=Frank Gill (ornithologist) | editor2-last=Donsker | editor2-first=David | year=2017 | title=Antbirds | work=World Bird List Version 8.1 | url=http://www.worldbirdnames.org/bow/antbirds/ | publisher=International Ornithologists' Union | accessdate=30 January 2018 }} Further reading{{refbegin}}
