The album was released on June 19, 1989 by Columbia Records/CBS. Supported by five US top 40 hits (including three that reached the top 10), Soul Provider achieved longevity on the charts. The album spent almost four years on the Billboard 200 and peaked at #3.[1] It was awarded 6× Platinum in the US[2] and has sold over 12,500,000 copies worldwide. For the single version of "Georgia on My Mind", CBS edited out Michael Brecker's saxophone solo and replaced it with one by Kenny G.[3] Reception{{Album ratings|rev1 = AllMusic |rev1score = {{Rating|4|5}}[4] |rev2 = Robert Christgau |rev2score = C−[5] |rev3 = The Rolling Stone Album Guide |rev3score = {{Rating|2|5}}[6] }} Soul Provider has received generally mixed reviews from critics. AllMusic retrospectively described it as "more of the same", but noted that due to this album, Bolton "was now stoking the romantic fires in bedrooms across America".[4] Robert Christgau gave the album a negative review, declaring Bolton to be "indistinguishable from pop metal except in the wattage of his guitar parts and the shamelessness of his song doctors."[5] The Rolling Stone Album Guide described the album as the beginning of Bolton's descent into overdone and disrespectful covers, though they added that some of the self-penned performances on the album showed potential.[6]Track listing{{Track listing| total_length = 42:41 | title1 = Soul Provider | writer1 = Michael Bolton, Andrew Goldmark | length1 = 4:28 | title2 = Georgia on My Mind | writer2 = Hoagy Carmichael, Stuart Gorrell | length2 = 4:58 | title3 = It's Only My Heart | writer3 = Bolton, Diane Warren | length3 = 4:33 | title4 = How Am I Supposed to Live Without You | writer4 = Bolton, Doug James | length4 = 4:15 | title5 = How Can We Be Lovers? | writer5 = Bolton, Warren, Desmond Child | length5 = 3:55 | title6 = You Wouldn't Know Love | writer6 = Bolton, Warren | length6 = 3:54 | title7 = When I'm Back on My Feet Again | writer7 = Warren | length7 = 3:47 | title8 = From Now On | note8 = Duet with Suzie Benson | writer8 = Bolton, Eric Kaz | length8 = 4:07 | title9 = Love Cuts Deep | writer9 = Bolton, Warren, Child | length9 = 3:49 | title10 = Stand Up for Love | writer10 = Bolton, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil | length10 = 4:44 }} Chart positionsAlbum
