He is president of the British Neuroscience Association.[2] EducationLightman was educated at Repton School[1] and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (MA, MB BChir, PhD). He did his clinical training at Middlesex Hospital Medical School{{fact|date=July 2017}} Career and ResearchLightman started his research career working on catecholamine uptake mechanisms in Cambridge where, after completed his clinical studies at the Middlesex Hospital in London, he studied the role of opioid peptides and brain stem catecholamine pathways in the regulation of neurohypophysial hormone secretion.{{fact|date=July 2017}} He later{{when|date=July 2017}}investigated the dynamics underlying stress hormone secretion.{{fact|date=July 2017}}
