{{BLP sources|date=August 2012}}Stephen Richard Turnbull (born 6 February 1948) is a specialist{{clarification needed|reason=His faculty information page -- the current cited source -- is obviously going to place more emphasis on the classes he teaches and maybe on his scholarly publications, which of course are more about religious history, but the word "specialist" implies he rarely or never works in other fields, which would be very questionable given that almost all of his popular books are about military, not religious, history.|date=July 2018}} in Japanese religious history.[1]Turnbull attended Cambridge University where he gained his first degree. He currently holds an MA in Theology, MA in Military History and a PhD{{clarification needed|reason=In what?|date=August 2018}} from the University of Leeds where he is a lecturer in Far Eastern Religions. He was on the editorial board of the short-lived Medieval History Magazine (2003–2005), which was published in association with the Royal Armouries. He was a consultant for the widely successful PC game Total War and also its well-received sequel Shogun 2, both products of Creative Assembly, as well as historical advisor on the severely panned Hollywood film 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves.[2] Selected works - 1979 – [https://books.google.com/books?id=Ny10prnQPuQC Samurai armies, 1550–1615.] London: Osprey Publishing. {{ISBN|978-0-85045-302-7}}; OCLC 6489751
