He is currently the Tazewell County State's Attorney, where he has served since 1995. He is the only State's Attorney in Illinois to successfully prosecute a sitting State Supreme Court Justice. In 2006, Umholtz was the Republican nominee for Illinois Attorney General but lost to incumbent Democrat Lisa Madigan.
