The school has 620 [1] students on roll. HistoryThe Christian Brothers arrived in Tralee in August 1854 on the invitation of the then Bishop of Kerry, David Moriarty. Brother Domnick McDonnell opened the existing National school at the rear of St. Johns Parish Church on 25 May 1855. The first help given to the Christian Brothers in Tralee came from John Mulchinock who was a member of a wealthy Tralee family. He provided the Brothers with a house at 27 Denny Street which is now part of the Imperial Hotel. It was soon apparent that owing to overcrowded state of the school, new premises would have to be found and a school consisting of 4 classrooms was opened in Edward Street in 1857. On 28 April 1862 the Christian Brothers opened the Monastery in Balloonagh with an enrollment of 160 boys. In 1862 Tralee had two Christian Brothers Schools, one at Edward Street and the other the Monastery in Balloonagh. In 1923 the 4 classrooms in Edward Street catered for 450 boys both national and secondary school students. On 11 August 1926 the bishop sanctioned the construction of a Secondary School for 260 pupils on the understanding that not more than that number of students would be received without permission of the Bishop This led to the planning of a new Intermediate School for 260 boys. ‘The Gardens’ site as it was known contained four acres and was enclosed by a wall 10 feet high. It was purchased from Tralee Urban District Council for £500. The contract for the new building was £23,000. Work began in September 1927 and the building was due to be completed in by February 1929. However construction was not to schedule and the building was completed in March 1930 costing £30,000. The new school had eight class rooms and in addition there were rooms for Chemistry, Physics, Drawing and Manual Work, waiting rooms and preparation rooms. The superior Brother Keegan addressed the lay teachers and the pupils. He told them that they were established in one of the finest schools in the country and that it would be known as Brother Walsh Memorial School –the man who planned it. Brother Laurence Walsh died suddenly while on his way to inspect the construction work on the new school on 17 December 1929. The Brothers then lived in a Monastery in Princes Street which is now part of the site occupied by the Brandon Hotel until 1960 when two new Monasteries were opened in Tralee, one attached to the new Primary school in Clounalour and the other adjoining the school at the Green. Sheila was the housekeeper at the Monastery in Princes Street and continued as housekeeper in the Monastery in the Green until it closed. The late Brother Lyons who taught many generations of students in the Green began teaching in Tralee when the school was just the 1927 red sandstone building. During his time in the Green he saw the school expand through its various stages of development In the mid 1960s due to increasing numbers three prefabricated buildings consisting of six classrooms were erected on a site which up to then was the school playground. At that time the school had two playing pitches “The Paddock” and what was affectionately known as “Cripples Acre”. The advent of free secondary education saw an increase in the demand for classroom space. Brother John J. Clarke was superior when an extension consisting of six classrooms, a science lab, a library, an assembly area, a staffroom and administration offices was built on the northern side of “Cripples Acre”. In the 1980s Br Séan Ó Dúgáin fulfilled his dream with the building on the southern side of “Cripples Acre” of a state of the art sports hall to cater for the Physical Education and development of the students. The employment of John O’Keeffe ,holder of seven All Ireland medals and numerous other sporting achievements, completed the fulfilment of Brother Ó Dúgáin’s dream. During Brother Gavin’s time as superior Technical Drawing, Woodwork and Art were introduced to the school curriculum. Specialised rooms were needed for teaching these subjects. In the 1990s the sports hall and the 1970s extension were linked by a new building consisting of a Drawing Room, A Woodwork Room, a Physics lab and a staffroom. A building that linked the original 1927 building to the 1970s extension was also constructed at this time. Bro Gavin also converted “The Paddock” into an all—weather play area. With Sean O’Brien as project manager a further prefabricated building consisting of five classrooms was erected in the staff car park Prefabricated structures are by their nature temporary. At this stage the 1960s prefabs needed to be replaced by a more permanent structure. When Brother Whelan was school Principal the Board of management decided that a new extension was necessary to bring the facilities up to meet modern educational needs. Sean O’Brien was again appointed project manager. The design plans for the new extension were overseen by Brother Whelan and Sean O’Brien. The planning and tender process was completed when Tony O’Keeffe was Principal but at all times Sean’s dream of having a new extension of the highest quality with the most modern facilities to satisfy the needs of the community of Tralee and the surrounding area has been fulfilled with the official opening of the new extension on 24 May 2013 almost 158 years to the day since the Brothers opened their first school in Tralee on 25 May 1855. Sadly the Christian Brothers direct involvement on the teaching staff of the school is no more. However the Board of Management and the staff are proud to acknowledge that the ethos of the Brothers is the basis of for the ethos of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust.[2] SportIn 2007 the school won the Munster Colleges Senior Gaelic football "A" (Corn Uí Mhuirí) title{{cn|date=November 2013}} and went on only to lose to Omagh CBS in the All-Ireland Hogan Cup final.[3] Notable former pupils
