It is endemic to Australia, where its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry forests. TaxonomyJohn Gould described the striated thornbill in 1838, giving it the common name of striated acanthiza.[2] Alternative common names include striped-crowned thornbill or tit-warbler, striated tit-warbler or tit, and green thornbill.[3]The striated thornbill still bears its original name.[4] A 2017 genetic study using both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA found that the ancestor of the striated thornbill diverged from that of the yellow thornbill around 6 million years ago.[5] Four subspecies are recognised.[6]
DescriptionThe adult striated thornbill is {{convert|9|–|10|cm}} long and weighs around {{convert|7|g}}.[7] It has a russet- or orange-brown crown with cream streaks, dull yellow-olive upperparts, olive-grey flanks, and cream underparts heavily streaked with black.[6] The brown thornbill (A. pusilla) is similar but lacks the white-streaked orange-brown cap and lives in shrubs.[7] FeedingThe striated thornbill is predominantly insectivorous, generally forages in the canopy of eucalypt trees, gleaning leaves for prey. It often hangs upside-down while foraging.[8] The striated thornbill also visits and feeds on extra-floral nectaries on the leaves of sunshine wattle (Acacia terminalis), helping pollinate the plant as it brushes against flower heads while feeding.[9] BreedingStriated thornbills form flocks of 7–20 birds outside of breeding season from late summer to winter, before breaking up into groups of 2–4, composed of a breeding pair plus helper birds.[8] References1. ^{{cite journal | authors = BirdLife International | title = Acanthiza lineata | journal = IUCN Red List of Threatened Species | volume= 2016 | page = e.T22704656A93979528 | publisher = IUCN | year = 2016 | url = http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22704656/0 | doi = 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2016-3.RLTS.T22704656A93979528.en | accessdate = 21 February 2017}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q1301469}}{{DEFAULTSORT:thornbill, striated}}2. ^{{cite book|last=Gould|first=John|title=Handbook to The birds of Australia, Volume 1|publisher=self|year=1865|pages=372|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=IH9IAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA372}} 3. ^{{cite book|last1=Gray|first1=Jeannie|last2=Fraser|first2=Ian|title=Australian Bird Names: A Complete Guide|url=https://books.google.com.au/books?id=z6ia8rqTa7EC&pg=PA187|year=2013|publisher=Csiro Publishing|location=Collingwood, Victoria | isbn=978-0-643-10471-6|page=187}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://biodiversity.org.au/afd/taxa/1661164f-f590-49c1-bc17-48401658203e |title=Subspecies Acanthiza (Subacanthiza) lineata lineata Gould, 1838 |author=Australian Biological Resources Study|date=4 December 2014|work=Australian Faunal Directory|publisher=Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, Australian Government|accessdate=5 February 2017|location=Canberra, Australian Capital Territory}} 5. ^{{cite journal|author=Marki, Petter Z.; Jønsson, Knud A., Irestedt, Martin; Nguyen, Jacqueline M.T.; Rahbek, Carsten; Fjeldså, Jon |date=2017|title=Supermatrix phylogeny and biogeography of the Australasian Meliphagides radiation (Aves: Passeriformes)|journal=Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution|volume=107|pages=516–29|doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2016.12.021}} 6. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{Cite book |author1=Schodde, Richard |author2=Mason, Ian J. |pages=216–18 |url = https://books.google.com.au/books?id=XXbJoaGF36YC&pg=PT1170&dq=Acanthiza+lineata&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj4jrC46ffRAhXGWbwKHUV2AqgQ6AEIITAB#v=onepage&q=Acanthiza%20lineata&f=false |title= Directory of Australian Birds: Passerines: Passerines|date = 1999}} 7. ^1 {{cite web| url=http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/Acanthiza-lineata | title=Striated thornbill | work=Birds in Backyards |accessdate=5 February 2017 | publisher=Birdlife Australia}} 8. ^1 {{cite journal | author= Bell, Harry L.; Ford, Hugh A. | title= A Comparison of the Social Organization of Three Syntopic Species of Australian Thornbill, Acanthiza | journal= Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology |volume= 19 |issue= 6 |year=1986| pages= 381–92 | url=https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hugh_Ford/publication/226757832_A_comparison_of_the_social_organization_of_three_syntopic_species_of_Australian_thornbill_Acanthiza/links/0912f508a5830a1d99000000.pdf | jstor=4599974 | doi=10.1007/bf00300540}} 9. ^{{cite journal | author= Knox, R.B.; Kenrick, J.; Bernhardt, P.; Marginson, R; Beresford, G.; Baker, I.; Baker, H.G. | title =Extrafloral nectaries as adaptations for bird pollination in Acacia terminalis | journal=American Journal of Botany | year= 1985| volume=72|issue=8| pages=1185–96 | jstor=2443398 |doi=10.1002/j.1537-2197.1985.tb08371.x }} 8 : Acanthiza|Birds of Queensland|Birds of New South Wales|Birds of Victoria (Australia)|Birds of South Australia|Endemic birds of Australia|Birds described in 1838|Taxonomy articles created by Polbot |
