Success Bank is a sandbank to the north of Cockburn Sound, off Fremantle, Western Australia within the limits of the Outer Harbour of Fremantle Harbour. The bank lies to the west of Owen Anchorage. It is about {{convert|5|m}} deep and is just to the south of the main shipping channel of Gage Roads.[1] Success Bank was named by Captain James Stirling after his ship {{HMS|Success|1825|6}}, which was used for a preliminary exploration of the Swan River region in 1827. On 28 November 1829, Success revisited Western Australia and ran aground on Carnac Reef, a shoal further to the south, causing extensive damage.[2] DescriptionThe sandbank extends about {{convert|8|km}} from the coast in a west and north-west direction, and is up to {{convert|1|km}} wide. It covers an area of {{convert|1205|ha}}. Two approximately {{convert|15|m|ft|adj=mid|-deep}} man-made shipping channels, built for the Fremantle Port Authority to carry cargo and other deep water ships to and from Gage Roads through to Cockburn Sound, dissect the sandbar. The name{{clarify|reason=Name of what? The sandbar? The two channels?|date=January 2017}} is Success Channel.[3] Success Bank is covered extensively with the seagrasses Posidonia and Amphibolis griffithii.[1] Parmelia Bank is a slightly smaller bank and runs approximately parallel to Success Bank, about {{convert|3|km}} further south extending from Woodman Point, almost to Carnac Island; it also is within the designated Fremantle Harbour - Outer Harbour.[4] The channel through this bank is likewise named after the bank - Parmelia Channel that leads into Cockburn Sound.
