The school was awarded dual Specialist Business and Enterprise College and Arts College status, before becoming an academy in January 2013. The school also houses the Ashfield based offices and studios of community radio station Takeover Radio. Sutton Community Academy offers a sixth form provision in consortium with Ashfield School, Kirkby College and Quarrydale Academy.
