The pipeline was designed for a throughput of 1.1 million tonnes per year. Currently, it is handling approximately 600,000 tonnes annually.[2] The diameter of pipeline varies between {{convert|8|and|12|in|mm}}. The pipeline is owned by Tazama Pipeline Limited, a joint company of the governments of Zambia (66.7%) and Tanzania (33.3%).[1][2] The pipeline is currently under privatization.
