Techkriti is an annual inter-collegiate technical and entrepreneurship festival of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Techkriti is also an umbrella term which refers to organizing student body under Science and Technology Council, Student Gymkhana, IIT Kanpur and several pre-festival events and social initiative undertaken by the student body. The 25th edition will be held from 7–10 March 2019. It was launched in 1995^[2] with the aim of developing interest and encouraging innovation in technology among students.

Etymologically, the word ‘Techkriti’ is composed of two words, ‘Tech’ in English which stands for technology and ‘Kriti’ in Sanskrit stands for creation, hence, the word ‘Techkriti’ signifies creation or innovation in technology.

The festival is held over four days every March, attracting footfall of over 40,000 from around 1500 colleges all over the world.

History

Techkriti was first held in the year 1995, and has since grown into one of the largest technical and entrepreneurial festivals in Asia.^[3]

Techkriti'07 was held at IIT Kanpur campus from 22 to 25 February 2007. The event was branded as Techkriti Oh-Seven!. The event witnessed an Air Show^[4] by the Akash Ganga team of Indian Air Force as part of the closing proceeds.

Techkriti'08 ^[5] was held from 14 to 17 February 2008, and had a participation of more than 150 colleges. Keynote presentations were given by Peter Grünberg, Kevin Warwick and Harsh Manglik. Also, Audiences swooned to the melodious tunes of the Pakistani band Strings and enjoyed thoroughly.

Techkriti'09 ^[6] was held at IIT Kanpur from February 12 to 15, 2009. It featured talks by Stephen Wolfram, David Morrison, G. Madhavan Nair and Ron Eglash, with a fireworks and laser show.

Techkriti'10 ^[7] was held from February 11 to 14, 2010, with IIT Kanpur celebrating its Golden Jubilee, and featured Dr Nikolaos Mavridis, developer of the world's first Arabic speaking humanoid robot, and also the Facebots robot, which can use Facebook account information to have conversations with friends. Techkriti’10 witnessed shows like “The Laser Man” and “Feeding the Fish”, who also performed during the closing ceremony of IPL 2010.

This was the first edition of Techkriti after Megabucks, the annual entrepreneurship festival of IIT Kanpur was amalgamated into it, adding entrepreneurship aspects to the festival.

Techkriti'11^[8] was organized from February 17 to 20, saw over 1,500 students from various colleges taking part in the 27 events with total prize money of Rs 22 lakh awarded.

Competitions include unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise control, a robot talent show, robogames,^[9] simulation game on the Great Wall of China, reactable (a musical user interface), interactive floor, interactive robots, the aero modelling events, Innovate - design events (including Junkyard Wars, Rube Goldberg, Tremor etc.) were also held. Speakers and guests included Russian mathematician Vladimir Voevodsky, astronaut Bruce E Melnick, Michael Gratzel, a designer of Millau Viaduct, Voting System designer David Bismark, Ashish Gupta, Managing Director, Hellion Ventures and Chander Baljee, founder of Royal Orchid Hotels.

Techkriti’11 also played host to mesmerizing and mind-reading “Magician Nigel Mead” from Britain.

Techkriti'12^[11] was held from 27 to 30 January 2012.^[12] The festival was based on a theme of 'Technology for the Future'. The chief guest in the opening ceremony was Richard Stallman, the founder of GNU.

Competitions, talks, exhibitions, shows and workshops were held, and prizes worth Rs. 25 Lacs were awarded in the various competitions which included SocCon, IDEAS, Wild Soccer, Scimatex, TakeOff, J.K. White Design Challenge, Robogames, Software Corner, Battlefield, ECDC, Insight, Endeavour, Gearloose, Junkyard Wars, Rube Goldberg, Tremor, Eureka, IORC, Stocksim, IOPC, Crypto, Episteme, Radioactive, and Cosmos. Deborah Berebichez ("The Science Babe"), Victor Hayes, Deepak Mohanty and other guest speakers^[13] took part in talks organized throughout the four days of the festival.

Techkriti'13 ^[15] was organized from 14 to 17 March 2013 with participation from more than 500 colleges including a footfall of over 25,000.{{citation needed|date=March 2014}} Prize money of more than 10 lacs were awarded. The festival's theme was "Fixing the Planet". Techkriti’13 was the first Carbon positive festival of India, with Women Empowerment Campaign and Educational Campaign. Speakers included Michael Foreman (NASA Astronaut), Marshall Strabala (Architect-Burh Khalifa), Jeff Liebermann (Host-Time Warp), John Mather (Noble Laureate), Robert Aumann (Noble Laureate), Mahesh Murthy and Oliver Smithies.^[16] There was a show of 3D projection mapping, a laser ahow, and a performance by Sukhwinder Singh. There was a vintage car exhibitions with cars such as the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (more than 100 years old), Jaguar, Austin Saloon, Ford Anglia, Singer and Morris Cowley. A record in the Guinness Book of World Records was broken for the largest number of people (1,451) solving a 3x3x3 Rubik's cube in a span of an hour at one place: it was broken on 17 March 2013 with the new record being set for 1,884 solvers.{{citation needed|date=March 2014}}

Techkriti'14 ^[17] was held from 6 to 9 March 2014, with the theme "Virtually Progressive World". It was a carbon positive festival, with initiatives including water conservation and women's safety. Events included Robogames, Indian Open Rubik's Cube, Ideas, Techkriti Grand Prix, Tremor, Sky Sparks and Radioactive, with new avenues including Robo Pirates (Aqua-Robotics), Multirovor (Quadrocopter), Richie Rich (Portfolio Optimization), Marketing Villa and Bridge Design Challenge.

Techkriti'15 ^[18] was held from 19 to 22 March 2015, with the theme "Blueprint to a Smarter World". Techkriti got bigger with more exciting competitions, workshops, talks, exhibitions and shows. Competitions included the likes of Robogames, Indian Open Rubik's Cube, Ideas, Techkriti Grand Prix, Multirovor (Quadrocopter),Innovation in Manufacturing Processes and many more. Several prominent personalities from across the globe graced the festival with their presence. K Radhakrishnan, former chairman, ISRO, Anthony Leggett, Nobel prize winner, Pat Spain, Beast Hunter host on Nat Geo, Meera Sanyal, former CEO and chairperson, Royal Bank of Scotland, Herald Rose, Wolf prize winner, Dilip Chhabaria founder, DC Design, Peter Schultz, co-inventor of fibre optics interacted with the students during their guest lecture. To entertain the participants, Techkriti had several shows too. While students danced to the tunes of Beltek and NDS & Blues on the third night, the final night was highlighted by Finnish rock band, Poets of the Fall.^[19]{{Circular reference|date=March 2019}}

Techkriti'16, themed “Beyond Our Planet”, was held from 3 to 6 March 2016. Growing bigger and more exciting, Techkriti’16 saw the attendance of many prominent personalities like Dr. Hamid Karzai, the former President of Afghanistan, Dr. Lyn Evans, Director, LCC CERN, Dr. Jorge Cham, Cartoonist, Robotist and creator of PhD Comics and many more celebrated guests. Apart from the numerous thrilling competitions and various mind provoking talks, a motorbike stunt show, called ‘Edge Ryderz’ was also held. The whole team of TVF Pitchers conducted an informal session with the students of IIT Kanpur. Renowned Indian film director, actor, playback singer and lyricist, Farhan Akhtar graced the closing night of Techkriti’16 with his breathtaking performance and delivering his social message M.A.R.D. among the people.

Techkriti'17 was held from 23 to 26 March 2017, with the theme "Factualising Fictions". The grandest of all the years, Techkriti'17 introduced many new competitions such as Robowars, Hover Rugby and Measure it-3D. The festival also hosted a number of celebrated guests, such as Prof. Henry Schaefer, one of the most highly cited scientists in the world, Rajat Sharma, a renowned name in the field of Indian journalism, Prof. K.C. Nicolaou, the 2016 Wolf Prize recipient for Chemistry and many others. The pre-fest talk was given by the famous American physicist Dr. Richard A. Muller. Techkriti'17 carried on the tradition of Techkriti through the mind stimulating talks and exciting exhibitions. Numerous informal events were also held. The third night of the extravaganza was rocked by artists such as Zephyrtone and DJ MorganJ. Sonu Nigam, the famous Indian playback singer made the people of Kanpur dance to his tunes on the finale night of Techkriti'17.

Techkriti’18 was held from 15 to 18 March 2018. The theme for this 24th edition was “Prism of Possibilities”. It was full of exciting competitions like Skysparks, TIC, Robowars with a total prize money of over 70 lacs. The fest also hosted various prominent personalities such as Hon’ble MK Amit Peretz (member of the Knesset, former Deputy Prime Minister of Israel), Jitendra Nath Goswami (popularly known as Moon Man of India, Padma Shri, 2017), Dr. Mohsin Wali (Honorary Physician to the President of India, Padma Shri, Cardiologist). Numerous informal events, intriguing exhibitions, enthralling talks and interesting workshops were also conducted. In addition, blasting performances and shows like Piyush Mishra’s concert, Willy William’s DJ night, Biswa Kalyan Rath’s stand up comedy also raised the fascination.

Organisation

Techkriti is an entirely student organized festival. The structure of the organising team is four-tiered. Leading the team are the Festival Coordinators along with a team of Heads, each with an allotted portfolio. Administrative portfolios include marketing, media and publicity, finance, security, hospitality and show management. Event-related portfolios include public relations, web and design. Each Head has his own team of coordinators and executives.

Workshops and talks

Workshops organised in Techkriti are designed to demonstrate advancements in science and technology to the student community. The four-day festival hosts workshops in electronics, sustainable development, aero-modelling, and application development. The workshops are conducted by professionals from the industry, guests and faculty members of IIT-Kanpur.

Students and academia at the festival can attend talks by professionals in various fields from India and abroad. Speakers at Techkriti have included APJ Abdul Kalam^[20] (Ex-President and Founder of India's missile program), Richard Muller^[21] (famous American physicist and professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley), Richard Stallman (Founder, FSF and GNU Project), Vladimir Voevodsky (Fields Medalist from Russia), Douglas Osheroff (Nobel Laureate-Physics), Dr. Lyn Evans (Director, LCC CERN), Michael Foreman (NASA Astronaut), Marshall Strabala (Architect-Burj Khalifa), Jeff Liebermann (Host-Time Warp), Victor Hayes (Father of Wi-Fi), Mahesh Murthy and Oliver Smithies. The "Indian Innovators" panel has included Uddhab Bharali (Innovator from Assam with 39 Universal Patents), Bindeshwar Pathak (Founder of Sulabh International), Rohit Bansal (Co-Founder and CEO, Snapdeal), L Kannan (Founder, Vortex Rural ATMs) and Irfan Alam (Founder and Chairman, Samman Foundation).

Guests at the 2014 festival included Walter Lewin, David J Griffiths, Jordan Soles, Alvin E. Roth, Palagummi Sainath and George Kourounis.

Guests at the 2015 festival included K Radhakrishnan, Anthony Leggett, Peter Schultz and many more eminent personalities.

Guests at the 2016 festival were ex-president of Afghanistan Dr. Hamid Karzai.^[22]

2017 was graced by guests such as Richard Muller, Henry Schaefer and Andrea Mocellin.^[23]

Competitions

Techkriti is known for hosting a variety of competitions with a total prize money of more than 70 Lacs. The competitions serve the backbone for fulfilling the basic motto of Techkriti - developing interest and encouraging innovation in technology among students. Competitions are classified in a few broad categories such as Robogames, ECDC, Take Off, Software Corner, Mixed Bowl, Design, Technovation, Entrepreneurial and Buizkriti.

ROBOGAMES

Robogames has events including Robowars, Manoeuvre, All India Research Championship (AIRC) and IARC.

Robowars

This competition is the ultimate test of engineering excellence, teamwork, strategy and gaming. The brightest engineers in India unleash their mightiest monsters in the fierce arena to fight enemy robots. Each team comes up with a wirelessly/wired controlled robot capable of a one on one combat. With pneumatic pincers, mighty armors, nifty axes and more innovative weapons, these robots compete to the very end.The one who stays, wins.

IARC

International Autonomous Robotics Challenge (IARC) is all about an autonomous bot built from scratch by participants, judged on its ability to perform usual tasks. It tests the level of precision in the end to end designing and fabrication of the bot, and intelligent use of sensors and coding. This is one of the flagship events of Techkriti, witnessing a large participation from across the country and also around the globe. It saw the footfall of 150 people (40+ teams) in the final round in 2017.

Manoeuvre

This event requires that participants construct a 4-wheeled gripper robot with constrained dimensions which could move over various terrains and performs simple tasks such as grabbing and shifting. Gameplay consists of two bots coordinating with each other and transporting and moving the blocks and special objects around and then stacking or arranging them in patterns thus fetching points. The one with the highest, wins.

ECDC

ECDC is a cluster of many events giving students an opportunity to showcase their technical skills in the field of electronics and circuit designing. In 2017, ECDC had 4 events under it: Electromania, Embedded and Electrade. Around 1500 entries are received every year.

Embedded

This event is all about productive synergy between hardware and software design. It poses a challenge to the students of electronics community to solve common problems through the help of embedded systems.

Electromania

This event is similar to video gaming, where one is required to build their own hand-held gaming device using an 8 bit microcontroller. A design of a led matrix and a joystick for controlling the gaming elements have to be designed. Key drivers of this event is Implementation, user interface etc.

Electrade

This event involves one to design an accurate rotary encoder, a very widely used device that couples with a shaft and outputs the angle it rotated as well as the direction of rotation using digital sensors with the aim to decode a Morse code that is represented by clockwise motion (dot) and anti-clockwise motion (dash).

Take Off

Take Off poses challenges to the aeromodelling community to come up with innovative aerial vehicles for different competitions and purposes. The competitions are Multirotor, Sky Sparks, Hover Mania etc.

Multirotor

In this event, participants will be judged in both the aspects of a multirotor that is on the expertise of flying skill, the stability of your bot and the ability to pick and drop payloads. These fascinating aircraft combine the flight characteristics of both a plane and a helicopter.

Sky Sparks

The competition involves RC aircraft with electric motors. The competition provides a platform to compete different flyers through a series of different rounds doing different maneuvers and showing their talent in flying like payload dropping, limbo flying and on spot landing. Skysparks is also the north zone for Boeing National Aeromodelling Competition and so the winners will further compete in the finals conducted by Boeing.

Hovermania

The competition as the name suggests is a rugby match among hovercrafts. One designs and fabricates one hovercraft that should be lightweight, easily maneuverable, quick and strong. It involves throwing the opponent out of the arena in a match of hovermania.

Software Corner

Hackers can get their hacking hats on and their fingers on the keyboard in software corner. The competitions include IOPC, IHPC, Chaos, Code Golf, Capture The Flag and Techkriti Open Source Programming.

IOPC

IOPC is the annual International Online Programming Contest of IIT Kanpur, organized by the Techkriti team. It is a prestigious programming contest where all coders have to whack their brains to code solutions to the given problems. It is the place where optimization, proficiency, skills and hardwork matters.

Mixed Bowl

Mixed Bowl, as the name suggests, has competitions from several areas of science and technology. The competitions are IORC, Mixed Bowl, Stratezenith and Concrete Quiz.

IORC

Indian Open Rubik's Cube is the first ever official Rubik's Cube competition in India started in IIT Kanpur. IORC is conducted under the patronage of WCA- World Cube Association. This event has twelve sub-events. Participants have advantage of competing among the speed cubers throughout the world.

Techkriti Grand Prix

Techkriti Grand Prix, brings a heart-pounding challenge for your engineering skills in building a remote controlled vehicle which performs via Taking sharp bends, zigzag curves on a rough road and jumping over planks, powered by a powerful internal combustion engine.

Campaigns

Every year, Techkriti, as a part of its social campaigns addresses one major issue in our world. In one of the previous years, we had decided to take on all of them together. "Virtually Progressing World" addressed the wide array of problems that we ourselves create while expanding our never-ending thirst for technology and innovation.

We have our social campaigns like Prakriti which is basically saving our planet and increasing greenery of the Earth. We arrange plantation drives in various parts of India. Along with it, Techkriti’13 was the first Carbon positive festival of India. Second we have a Women Empowerment Campaign.

H.O.P.E.

Techkriti'17 took up an initiative to spread literacy and quality education to all sections of our society under its social initiative H.O.P.E. (Handing Opportunities by Promoting Education). Through H.O.P.E, we aimed at reaching out to kids who do not have adequate access to education and make learning a joy accessible to all.

Vastra Yogdan (Cloth Donation Drive) (14 June 2017): To encourage the spirit of giving, Techkriti organized camps to donate old blankets and winter clothes to the needy homeless people for winter. The aim was to encourage more and more people to take part in such activities.

Science Workshop (13 August 2017): To promote scientific temperament and to change learning perspective among kids, Techkriti organized these workshops. It consisted of innovative experiments. The target was to reach maximum schools in Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi, Varanasi, and Agra.

Book Donation Drive (15 October 2017): In Techkriti Open School Championship, an examination for the school students, Techkriti tried to collect old books from the students and then donated them to the needy children who are deprived of the education or they cannot afford the reference books for the class 9th – 12th.

Mega Bike-a-Thon (17 December 2017): It is a rally for creating an awareness among the people for the increasing levels of pollution in Kanpur and promoting the use of cycles. It had a very overwhelming participation and was supported by many prominent personalities of Kanpur.

Children's Day (14 November 2017): Techkriti had helped Jyoti Badhir Vidyalaya, Bithoor which is a school for Deaf children which is solely based on charity.

Rally for rivers campaign (20 October 2017): Techkriti has also supported the rally for rivers campaign by making an awareness video during the Udghosh’17 for conserving water and releasing posters on the current issue of water scarcity.

My Clean India Campaign (2 October 2017) : Techkriti team visited some of the nearby schools of Kanpur and spread the awareness among the students with the help of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Kanpur.

Another attempt of Techkriti to give back to the society was the 'Spreading Smiles' campaign, where we aimed at sending out positive messages to the stressed youngsters. Another extension to the Spreading Smiles campaign was 'Make a Wish', under which team Techkriti visited Subhash Children Home and fulfilled the wish of the children to have a sports and hobby room. Also, to sensitize the society towards the needs of the 22% of Indian Population which lives below poverty line with no access to proper water, food or shelter, leave alone the measures to combat the cold weather, Techkriti undertook the Winter Collection Drive in as many as 6 cities. We along with Prayas, IIT Kanpur and other NGO's are working to educate the children. We also have a health campaign where we are organizing health camps in nearby areas in association with the hospitals of Kanpur and Lucknow. We along with Goonj had also organized a collection drive to help the affected people of Uttarakhand.

Poster Making Competition(8 September 2018) : On the occasion of International Literacy Day, Techkriti'19 organized a poster making competition for the school students at Siksha Sopan under the umbrella of HOPE. Under this initiative, more than 100 students from classes 1-12 participated in what turned out to be a beautiful day as young minds created happiness with their infinitive imagination and tender hands. As a token of appreciation, Goodies were distributed among them.

B.L.I.S.S.

Techkriti’19 introduced a new social initiative, B.L.I.S.S. (‘Brightening Lives by Igniting Social Support’)that aims to eliminate the darkness from the lives of the overlooked brackets of society by providing support and care with the belief of spreading smiles. The steps will be aimed to make the vulnerable and overlooked sectors of society realize that we stand for their well-being and enrichment. Our support and actions for the overlooked classes of the society will help to brighten up their lives and give them a ray of hope.

Through B.L.I.S.S., we try to enlighten and touch the lives of overlooked areas of the society by providing support socially and emotionally in the best possible ways to bridge the gap between privileged and deprived areas and lift the darkness of baseless taboos and prejudices of our society to realise our ultimate aim of bringing happiness and spreading smiles. The prime intent would be to bring in the lost connectedness and equality in the society by handing over every possible opportunity that such sections of the society were kept deprived of.

Under the umbrella of BLISS, Techkriti conducted several activities and events with the aim of providing social support:

UBA Marathon(13 October 2018): Techkriti organised a ‘Run for a cause’ marathon, to promote the noble cause ‘Educating farmers and spreading awareness against natural calamity’ in the wake of recent floods in kanpur villages.Techkriti, through BLISS, felt the need to support these farmers and to educate farmers about the flood-affected situations and hence strove to spread awareness about the preventive measures for the flood-hit regions in the villages. Marathon organised for ‘Under 16’ and ‘Under 20’ age groups, also aimed to spot, stimulate and reward the athletic talent and recognize the importance of sports facilities.

Old Age Home Visit(28 September 2018): Techkriti team visited old age home and interacted with the senior citizens with the aim of letting them know they are needed and cared of.

Blood Donation drive(2 October 2018): Techkriti along with Raktarpan, IIT Kanpur organized a blood donation campaign on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti.
