It is named after the Telefol ethnic group, who knew the animal long before it was discovered scientifically by the Australian zoologist Tim Flannery. It lives in the oak forests along the Nong River in the middle of Papua New Guinea, at altitudes between 1500 and 2000 m. After the drought and wildfires of 1997, these forests were destroyed, which probably made the species extinct. HabitatThis cuscus can be found in the areas of Telefomin and Tifalmin, and Papua New Guinea. It might be found even further northeast or west of the known collection areas. The only place where it is known with certainty was largely destroyed by fire in 1998.[2] References1. ^{{IUCN2008|assessor=Leary, T.|assessor2=Seri, L.|assessor3=Flannery, T.|assessor4=Wright, D.|assessor5=Hamilton, S.|assessor6=Helgen, K.|assessor7=Singadan, R.|assessor8=Menzies, J.|assessor9=Allison, A.|assessor10=James, R.|display-assessors=etal|year=2008|id=16851|title=Phalanger matanim|downloaded=28 December 2008}} Database entry includes justification for why this species is listed as critically endangered 2. ^Leary, T., Seri, L., Flannery, T., Wright, D., Hamilton, S., Helgen, K., Singadan, R., Menzies, J., Allison, A., James, R., Salas, L. & Dickman, C. 2008.
