Teratophilia refers to the sexual attraction to either monsters - from the victorian penchant for mummy erotica[1] to the LGBTQ+ icon Babadook,[2] or to the attraction to deformed people. The word comes from the greek τέρας meaning monster and φιλία meaning love.[3][4][5]

In general

Teratophilia is classified as paraphilia.[6] Although it has been noted that this classification might be a little unfair. Rather than view the condition as a kink, defenders of teratophilia believe it allows people to see beauty outside of societal standards.[7] Among other things it has been suggested, that monsters can function as an escapist fantasy for some straight women since the monster is able to embody masculine attributes without presenting itself as a man, which may embody trauma and terror in extreme cases, or aggravating patriarchal arrangements in the least.[8]

There is more then 600 fan fictions under the teratophilia tag. Around 500 of them are either mature or explicit. First fan fiction under this tag has been published in 2009, however until 2015 only 4 writters have been publishing stories in this category. The amount of teratophiliac fan fictions increased massively in 2017 and 2018, and the numbers are still adding up.

The most popular creatures are werewolfs, demons, symbiot from Venom, dragons and orcs. Other favorites include nagas and tentacle monsters. Teratophiliac fan fiction tends to contain kinks related to unusual genitalia (knotting, size kink and various kinds of specific genitalia e. g. pumpkin penis), pregnancy (breeding kink, oviposition and pregnancy kink), semen (come inflation, creampie and come eating), mind manipulation (hypnotism, sex pollen and Aphrodisiacs) and tentacles. The amount of fan fictions tagged as teratophilia with focus on deformed people is under 1%.[9]

Tumblr

The literal usage of teratophilia is way more common. The focus is on wide range of monsters from krampus to Pennywise from the movie It.[10][11] The reasoning behind the attraction is varied as well, for instance cute teeth, inhuman strenght or scales might all be reason for liking monsters. There are even creatures described as soft wifes. In this regard xenomorph from Alien should be mentioned even though she falls more into the xenophilia category.[12]

In 2017 the monster from the The Shape of Water became popular. Amphibian Man is regarded as one of the more gentle monsters.[12] The reaction to the creature has led to attempts by some dildo manufacturers to recreate the genitalia of the Amphibian Man.[13][14] The popularity of The Shape of Water has also led to slight rise of popularity of the creature from the Black lagoon from the movie 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon'.

The simbiot from Venom has gained substantial traction after the film's release in 2018.[12] Venom stans received some media attention in 2019 after they took stance against people with crush on Ted Bundy. The conflict has gotten so much traction online that even Marvel Comics' Venom writer Donny Cates has weighed in. [15][16]

Mothman should also be mentioned. To quote Brian David Gilbert "Everyone things the mothman is pretty sexy."[17] The popularity of mothman on tumblr might have been boosted by the release of episode on mothman by Buzzfeed Unsolved, which has been seen by more then 6 milion people.[18][12]

The term exophilia is beginning to be used instead of the term teratophilia partly because teratophilia became blacklisted after 17.12. 2018 and also because exophilia doesnt include love of deformed people, which is not widely used meaning of the word on tumblr.[12][19]

Reddit

The teratophiliac community on reddit has more then 950 subscribers. The content is mostly m/f. Some of the content is not pornographic. The types of monsters are varied, although there is a slight preference for horns and fur. As of this writing -25.3. 2019- there is no content depicting realistically deformed people.[20]

Bigfoot

Bigfoot erotica has entered the general consciousness after many news outlets,  including CNN and BBC, published an article about incident that happened on twitter. Virginia Democratic Congressional 2018 candidate Leslie Cockburn tweeted about her opponent Denver Riggleman being a devotee of Bigfoot erotica. Cockburn used picture of naked  Bigfoot from Riggleman's instagram as a proof. Riggleman denied all accusations.[21][22] Dr. Chuck Tingle, two time Hugo award finalist, wrote a story about the incident. The story is called 'Don’t Vote For Virginia Congressional Hopeful Denber Wiggleman Because He Is Full Of Hate, Not Because Bigfoot Makes Him Hard'.[23] Some popular Bigfoot erotica titles include Cum for Bigfoot, Boffing Bigfoot, Savage Love, Bigfoot Did Me From Behind And I Liked It, The Butt Files - The Case Of  Bigfoot's Weiner, Seduced by Bigfoot and Ravaged by the Yeti: The Secret Adventures of a Fertile Housewife.[23][24][25]
