Glass retained ownership of the opera, and did not allow for the "live" recording of the premiere (with Jayne West and Sanford Sylvan) to be released until 2009. Until then, Moran encouraged his fans to distribute bootleg copies so that people could hear it. Performance historyIt was premiered on December 11, 1985, at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[5] For its 25th anniversary of creation, the {{ill|Théâtre des Petites Garnottes|fr}} presented the Canadian premiere of the opera in September, 2010 at the Salle Jean-Paul Tardif in Quebec, Canada. SynopsisThe Grimm fairy tale tells of a wicked stepmother who murders her stepson, fearing that he reminds her husband of his late wife and serves him up in a stew to his hungry, unsuspecting father. The boy's sister buries her brother's bones under a juniper tree where their mother is buried, and the child's spirit returns as a singing bird who wreaks vengeance on the evil stepmother (dropping a millstone on her) before being restored to life in the bosom of his family.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.chesternovello.com/Default.aspx?TabId=2432&State_3041=2&workId_3041=12770 |title=Philip Glass - The Juniper Tree (1985) - Music Sales Classical |publisher=Chesternovello.com |date= |accessdate=2013-12-11}} {{Philip Glass}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Juniper Tree, The}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.philipglass.com/music/compositions/juniper_tree.php |title=Music: The Juniper Tree |publisher=Philip Glass |date=1985-12-11 |accessdate=2013-12-11 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141028162211/http://www.philipglass.com/music/compositions/juniper_tree.php |archivedate=2014-10-28 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite news| url=https://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/23/arts/music/23glas.html?ex=1188532800&en=d86cffe29650f231&ei=5070 | work=The New York Times | first=Allan | last=Kozinn | title=When a Bird Sings an Aria, You'd Be Wise to Duck | date=2007-03-23}} 4. ^{{cite news| url=https://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/23/arts/music/23glas.html?ex=1188532800&en=d86cffe29650f231&ei=5070 | work=The New York Times | first=Allan | last=Kozinn | title=When a Bird Sings an Aria, You'd Be Wise to Duck | date=2007-03-23}} 5. ^{{cite news|author=JOHN ROCKWELL, Special to the New York Times |url=https://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9401E1D9143BF936A25751C1A963948260 |title=Opera - Glass-Moran 'Juniperi Tree,' In Cambridge - Nytimes.Com |publisher=New York Times |date=1985-12-15 |accessdate=2013-12-11}} 6. ^ {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070705032030/http://members.macconnect.com/users/r/rbtmoran/juniper_tree.htm |date=July 5, 2007 }} 6 : Operas|Operas by multiple composers|Operas by Philip Glass|Compositions by Robert Moran|Minimalist operas|Cannibalism in fiction |
