The film was directed by Paul Wendkos.[3] SynopsisThe film showcases the first 48 hours of the hijacking, until Derickson's liberation. After the aircraft leaves Athens, Derickson is forced at gunpoint to the flight deck door by "Castro", one of the terrorists. She is able to defuse the situation by communicating with him in German[4] and singing a folk song[5], convincing him to release hostages upon landing in Beirut and Algiers and pleading for the other hijacker to stop harming the passengers. Her efforts are shown to save the lives of all but one hostage, Robert Stethem, whose body was thrown on the tarmac in Beirut. Cast
NominationsIn 1988, at the 40th Primetime Emmy Awards, the film received five Emmy nominations: for Outstanding Television Movie[6]; Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special[7]; Outstanding Makeup for a Limited Series or Movie (Non-Prosthetic); Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Limited Series or Movie; and David Yewdall[8] for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Special.[9] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1mtZAAAAMAAJ|title=Films by genre: 775 categories, styles, trends, and movements defined, with a filmography for each|first=Daniel|last=López|date=1 January 1993|publisher=McFarland & Co.|via=Google Books}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=f7Z_kOGlnVYC&pg=PA193|title=The U.S. Media and the Middle East: Image and Perception|first=Yahya R.|last=Kamalipour|date=1 January 1997|publisher=Greenwood Publishing Group|via=Google Books}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/477035/Taking-of-Flight-847-The-Uli-Derickson-Story-The/full-credits.html|title=The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story|work=Turner Classic Movies|publisher=Turner Broadcasting System (Time Warner)|location=Atlanta|accessdate=August 13, 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=DJZdteZ2H1oC&pg=PA129|title=The Chosen Image: Television's Portrayal of Jewish Themes and Characters|first1=Jonathan|last1=Pearl|first2=Judith|last2=Pearl|date=1 January 1999|publisher=McFarland|via=Google Books}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=bNOBbrHbBTwC&pg=PA77|title=The Princess Diaries: Give Me Five|first=Meg|last=Cabot|date=4 September 2008|publisher=Pan Macmillan|via=Google Books}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwtv/article/CBSs-48-HOURS-to-Present-The-Spymasters-CIA-in-the-Crosshairs-Today-20160520|title=CBS's 48 HOURS Presents 'The Spymasters - CIA in the Crosshairs' Tonight|first=TV News|last=Desk|website=BroadwayWorld.com}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=kW8j6sHvrewC&pg=PA615|title=Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors|first=Jerry|last=Roberts|date=5 June 2009|publisher=Scarecrow Press|via=Google Books}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=https://deadline.com/2017/07/david-yewdall-dead-vsound-editor-fifth-element-the-thing-escape-from-new-york-1202124153/|title=David Yewdall Dies: ‘The Fifth Element’ & ‘The Thing’ Sound Editor Was 66|first1=Erik|last1=Pedersen|first2=Erik|last2=Pedersen|date=6 July 2017|publisher=}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.emmys.com/awards/nominees-winners/1988|title=Nominees/Winners|website=Television Academy}} External links
