Hitchens, a great admirer of Thomas Paine, covers the history of Paine's 1791 book, The Rights of Man, and analyzes its significance.[1] ReceptionThe book was praised by Richard Brookhiser of The New York Times, who observed, "Hitchens's discussion of Paine's book is really a discussion of two books, Paine's and Burke's. 'This classic exchange between two masters of polemic,' he says, 'is rightly considered to be the ancestor of all modern arguments between Tories and radicals.' Hitchens is in Paine's corner, but like a good trainer, he knows the other fighter's strengths."[2] Nicholas Lezard of The Guardian described it as "an elegant and useful primer on a subject which [...] ought still to engage us all."[3] Publishers Weekly similarly called the book a "lucid assessment" of Paine and lauded Hitchens's "characteristically energetic prose".[4] Conversely, scholar John Barrell wrote that the book contained historical inaccuracies and criticized its similarities to John Keane's book Tom Paine: A Political Life. Barrell wrote, "compared with any other book on Paine I can think of, this one is casual, even perfunctory. Long before I reached the end of what is a very long short book, I was at a loss to know why it had been written." He added, "There is a bit of marvelling and revelling here and there, but it is as routine as everything else in this book, which reads like the work of a tired man."[5] References1. ^{{cite journal |title=Hitchens: How Paine's 'Rights' Changed the World |publisher=NPR |date=October 23, 2007 |url=https://www.npr.org/2007/10/23/15328527/hitchens-how-paines-rights-changed-the-world |accessdate=July 16, 2016}} {{Hitcheana|state=expanded}}{{Thomas Paine}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Thomas Paine's Rights of Man: A Biography}}{{US-poli-bio-book-stub}}2. ^{{cite journal |last=Brookhiser |first=Richard |authorlink=Richard Brookhiser |title=Tories and Radicals |work=The New York Times |date=November 11, 2007 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/11/books/review/Brookhiser-t.html |accessdate=July 16, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite journal |last=Lezard |first=Nicholas |authorlink=Nicholas Lezard |title=No Paine, no gain |work=The Guardian |date=8 September 2007 |url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2007/sep/08/featuresreviews.guardianreview3 |accessdate=July 16, 2016}} 4. ^{{cite journal |title=Thomas Paine's Rights of Man |work=Publishers Weekly |date=July 9, 2007 |url=http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-87113-955-9 |accessdate=July 16, 2016}} 5. ^{{cite journal |last=Barrell |first=John |authorlink=John Barrell |title=The Positions He Takes |work=London Review of Books |date=30 November 2006 |url=http://www.lrb.co.uk/v28/n23/john-barrell/the-positions-he-takes |accessdate=July 16, 2016}} 6 : 2007 non-fiction books|American biographies|Biographies about writers|Books by Christopher Hitchens|English-language books|Thomas Paine |
