Perkins and his wife Teresa. He has a sister, Polly and is the great-grandson of A. P. Herbert, Independent Member of Parliament for Oxford University (1935–1950). He attended Trinity Catholic School, Leamington Spa and Silverdale Comprehensive School in Sheffield. Perkins worked in the private sector from 1987 until he was elected to Parliament in 2010. He was in IT Sales: consultant and then Regional Manager for the Prime Time Recruitment organisation. He then set up a rugby product business.[6] Perkins was a councillor for Rother Ward on Chesterfield Borough Council from 2003–2011.[7] He was a Director of Families First Co-operative, a social enterprise that ran an early years nursery in Chesterfield, and set up the Chesterfield Flood Victims Appeal, which raised over £13,000 for victims of the floods in Chesterfield in 2007. Parliamentary careerPerkins' defeat of Chesterfield's sitting Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Holmes, saw him overturn a majority of 3,000 to win by 549 votes despite a national swing against the Labour Party. Perkins was largely elected owing to retention of the existing Labour vote, as there was a 7.5% swing towards the Conservative party in the constituency with Labour making a net gain of 61 votes in comparison to 2005.[8][9] Following Perkins' election to Parliament in 2010, he asked a question in David Cameron's first post-election Prime Minister's Questions in the 2010 session. He backed David Miliband for the Labour leadership and was named by the Financial Times as one of the best six newcomers of the first 100 days of the 2010 parliament.[10] Under Ed Miliband, he became the first of the 2010 intake of new members[11] to speak from the front bench when becoming a Shadow Education Minister in September 2010 under Andy Burnham. He was moved into the Shadow Business team as Shadow Minister for Enterprise and Small Business in 2011, under Chuka Umunna. As Shadow Business Minister he was responsible for Labour's policies on Access to Finance, Small Businesses, Regulation/ de-regulation, Insolvency, Procurement, Pubs and the High Street. He was elected to the Communities and Local Government Select Committee. Douglas Alexander appointed him one of three Labour Party Deputy Chairs in July 2014 for the 2015 General Election campaign alongside Gloria De Piero and Jonathan Ashworth. He had previously run Labour's by election campaign in Wythenshawe and Sale East. He also worked on by election campaigns in Corby, Bradford West and Eastleigh. Perkins belongs to the Labour Friends of Israel lobby group.[12] In parliament he has led Opposition Day debates for Labour on pub company regulation, Sunday trading laws for the Olympics, on the Deregulation Bill alongside Chi Onwurah. He has secured adjournment debates against Derbyshire Fire Station closures, that led to a u-turn on plans to close 18 Derbyshire fire stations, and against the sale of legal highs. Perkins proposed in 2016, via a 10-minute private members' bill, that "God Save the Queen" should cease to be the anthem used by English teams at international sporting fixtures. The second reading was due for 4 March,[13][14] but was cancelled.[15] Perkins was Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces in the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn, but resigned on 27 June 2016, along with many of his colleagues.[16] He is the current chair of the All Party Parliamentary Pub Group and the Labour Friends of the Forces. Perkins supported the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen against the Shia Houthis.[17] Personal lifeA former Chesterfield, Sheffield Tigers RUFC and Derbyshire Rugby Union player, Perkins qualified as a rugby coach in 2006 and coached a junior team at Sheffield Tigers RUFC. He follows Sheffield United, Chesterfield FC and British Tennis. He is a friend of Jonny Marray, the British Tennis player who won the Wimbledon Men's Doubles title in 2012.[18] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.parliament.uk/biographies/commons/toby-perkins/3952|title=Toby Perkins MP|website=UK Parliament|accessdate=11 June 2017}} 2. ^{{London Gazette |issue=59418 |date=13 May 2010 |page=8740}} 3. ^{{cite news| url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/democracylive/hi/representatives/profiles/64625.stm | title = Toby Perkins MP | accessdate = 5 August 2010 | publisher = BBC Online}} 4. ^{{cite news| url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/england/8667599.stm | title = Recount gives Tories Amber Valley | accessdate = 5 August 2010 | date = 7 May 2010 | publisher = BBC News Online}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.tobyperkins.org.uk/2016/05/chesterfield-may-day-2016-speech-full-transcript/|title=Chesterfield May Day 2016 speech- FULL TRANSCRIPT – Toby Perkins MP – Toby Perkins MP|website=www.tobyperkins.org.uk|accessdate=11 June 2017}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.clubrugby.co.uk|title=Lewis|website=www.clubrugby.co.uk|accessdate=11 June 2017}} 7. ^{{cite web| url = http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/localnews/Councillor-demands-inquiry-into-closure.1624958.jp | title = Councillor demands inquiry into closure of new park café | accessdate = 5 August 2010 | date = 13 July 2006 | publisher = Yorkshire Post}} 8. ^{{cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/election2010/results/constituency/b04.stm | publisher=BBC News | title=Election 2010 – Chesterfield}} 9. ^{{cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/vote2005/html/141.stm | work=BBC News | title=BBC NEWS – Election 2005 – Chesterfield}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/93221fb6-a638-11df-8767-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2g0XkWtTU|title=Subscribe to read|website=Financial Times|accessdate=11 June 2017}} 11. ^List of MPs elected in the United Kingdom general election, 2010 12. ^{{cite news |url=http://www.lfi.org.uk/in-parliament/ |title=LFI Supporters in Parliament |work=Labour Friends of Israel |date=23 March 2018}} 13. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-35296296|title=MPs back calls for English national anthem|publisher=BBC News|date=13 January 2016|accessdate=4 March 2016}} 14. ^{{cite news|last=Grierson|first=Jamie|url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/mar/04/mps-debate-scrap-god-save-the-queen-england-games-national-anthem-fa-rfu?CMP=twt_a-culture_b-gdnculture|title=MPs to debate scrapping God Save the Queen at England games|work=The Guardian|date=4 March 2016|accessdate=4 March 2016}} 15. ^{{cite news|last=Henderson|first=Michael|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/12183867/Dont-let-a-meddling-Labour-MP-scrap-God-Save-the-Queen.html|title=Don't let a meddling Labour MP scrap 'God Save the Queen'|work=The Daily Telegraph|date=5 March 2016|accessdate=8 March 2016}} 16. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/26/labour-shadow-cabinet-resignations-jeremy-corbyn-who-has-gone |last1=Syal |first1=Rajeev |last2=Perraudin |first2=Frances|title=Shadow cabinet resignations: who has gone and who is staying|publisher=The Guardian|date=27 June 2016|accessdate=27 June 2016}} 17. ^{{cite news |title=The Labour rebels who didn’t back the Yemen vote have blood on their hands |url=https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/oct/28/emily-thornberry-labour-mps-blood-hands-yemen-conflict-saudi-arabia |work=The Guardian |date=28 October 2016}} 18. ^{{cite web|title=Securing Britain's Sporting Chance|url=http://www.tobyperkins.org.uk/2012/07/securing-britains-sporting-chance/|website=Toby Perkins MP|accessdate=29 March 2015}} External links
