It falls within the Highland council area for local government purposes. Tornagrain lies {{convert|1.2|mi|km|0}} south of Inverness (Dalcross) Airport; and {{convert|1.5|mi|km|0}} east of Castle Stuart Golf Course which was developed in 2009 and hosted the Barclays Scottish Open Championship for the first time in 2011. Plans to expand Tornagrain into a community for more than 10,000 residents[1] were submitted to planning authorities by the Moray Estate.
