It is found in a small area of tropical vine forest from Paluma (near Townsville) to Mount Spurgeon (near Mossman) in northeastern Queensland, Australia. It differs from the brown antechinus, with which it was previously thought to be conspecific, in its longer and darker fur. It shares the unusual mating behaviour of many of its relatives in that shortly after the breeding season all males die from stress-related disease.[3] Resources1. ^{{MSW3 Groves | pages = 28–29}} {{Dasyuromorphia|D.D.}}{{Taxonbar|from=Q134074}}{{marsupial-stub}}2. ^{{IUCN2008|assessor=Burnett, S.|assessor2=Winter, J.|last-assessor-amp=yes|year=2008|id=136555|title=Antechinus adustus|downloaded=9 October 2008}} 3. ^{{cite book | last = Menkhorst | first = Peter | year = 2001 | title = A Field Guide to the Mammals of Australia | publisher = Oxford University Press | page = 252}} 3 : Dasyuromorphs|Mammals of Queensland|Mammals described in 1923 |
