However, she became the subject of controversy in 2000 when New Party politicians Elmer Fung, Hsieh Chi-ta, and Tai Chi accused her of attempting to flee to New York City with a suitcase containing NT$85 million. In response, she filed a defamation suit against them on 29 March 2000, making her the only first lady in Taiwan's history to become involved in a lawsuit. The case involved the testimony of Wang Kuang-yu, which marked the first time that any Investigation Bureau director testified in a case under Investigation Bureau jurisdiction.[5] The three were cleared of charges, but Tseng appealed the verdict to the Taiwan High Court.[3] The appeal was submitted in April 2002, and the High Court began its own investigation in November.[6] In December 2003, the High Court reversed the Taipei District Court's decision. All three accusers were fined NT$81,000. Hsieh refused to pay, and was sentenced to three months imprisonment.[7] References1. ^{{cite news|last1=Bloom|first1=Dan|title=New book sheds light on former leader|url=http://www.taiwantoday.tw/ct.asp?xItem=24990&CtNode=436|accessdate=2014-10-09|publisher=Taiwan Today|date=2007-12-07}} {{commons category|Tseng Wen-hui}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Tseng, Wen-hui}}{{Taiwan-bio-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|last1=Lee|first1=Hsin-fang|last2=Hsu|first2=Stacy|title=Lee Teng-hui recounts political life in memoir|url=http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/front/archives/2013/05/27/2003563270|accessdate=2014-10-09|publisher=Taipei Times|date=2013-05-27}} 3. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2002/04/01/130049|date=2002-04-01|publisher=Taipei Times|title=Newsmakers: Former first lady shows her stronger side|last=Lin|first=Mei-chun|accessdate=2007-06-14}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://web.drnh.gov.tw/%A7%F5%B5n%BD%F7/history/history_photo/history_photo_2_4.htm|publisher=Academia Historica, Republic of China|accessdate=2007-06-14|title=歷史剪影}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=Lin|first1=Mei-chun|title=Investigator says Lee's wife didn't flee with millions|url=http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/local/archives/2001/12/18/0000116273|accessdate=8 October 2016|work=Taipei Times|date=18 December 2001}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Chu|first1=Monique|title=Ministry backs up former first lady|url=http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2002/11/08/0000178742|accessdate=8 October 2016|work=Taipei Times|date=8 November 2002}} 7. ^{{cite news|last1=Huang|first1=Tai-lin|title=Prison was a cinch, says defamation queen|url=http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2004/03/02/2003100823|accessdate=8 October 2016|work=Taipei Times|date=2 March 2004}} 7 : 1926 births|Living people|First Ladies of the Republic of China|Second Ladies of the Republic of China|Taiwanese Christians|People from New Taipei|Lee Teng-hui |
