It is located {{convert|3|km}} north-north west of Kirkcudbright and {{convert|6|km}} east of Gatehouse of Fleet on the main A75 trunk road.[1] It is in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire ,[2] Dumfries and Galloway.[3] Twynholm was also a parish from medieval times until 1975, including the neighbouring parish of Kirkchrist from 1654.[4] The etymology of the name is uncertain. It may be from the British twyn (a bank or hillock) and the Saxon hame meaning home,[5] or be of Scots derivation and mean "between the river banks".[6] There are a variety of listed buildings in the vicinity including the parish church[7] and the ruins of the 16th century Cumstoun Castle.[8] Notable residents
