It is located 165 km southeast of Murmansk. This airfield provides 20 revetments for combat aircraft. Umbozero was identified in the early 1960s by US reconnaissance aircraft, but only a few aircraft were observed at the airfield.[2] In summer 1967 the runway was being paved.[3] No regiment is believed to have been assigned permanently to the base, and as it contains almost no infrastructure it is thought to be a dispersal airfield for tactical aircraft. Umbozero South airfieldA nearby airfield with a 3000 m runway, listed on charts as "Umbozero South", exists 16 km south of Umbozero airfield. Like Umbozero, it has almost no infrastructure. It is also categorized as a naval reserve airfield[4][5]. It was one of nine Arctic staging bases for the Tupolev Tu-22M (Backfire).[6] References1. ^197803_VOL. 3 OF 4 VOLUMES ANNUAL INDEX TO PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPLOITATION PRODUCTS JANUARY-DECEMBER 1978, CREST: CIA-RDP79T01184A000100030001-6, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC. {{Russia-mil-stub}}2. ^[https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/document/cia-rdp78b04558a000800090026-7 CABLE TO AFSSO USAFE FROM NPIC], September 9, 1963, CIA-RDP78B04558A000800090026-7, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC. 3. ^[https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/document/cia-rdp78b03817a000700030031-1 CABLE TO DIRNSA FROM NPIC], August 1, 1967, CIA-RDP78B03817A000700030031-1, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC. 4. ^[https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/document/cia-rdp87t00758r000102160001-8 MONTHLY INDEX PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPLOITATION PRODUCTS MARCH 1987], CIA-RDP87T00758R000102160001-8, March 1, 1987, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC. 5. ^197803_VOL. 3 OF 4 VOLUMES ANNUAL INDEX TO PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPLOITATION PRODUCTS JANUARY-DECEMBER 1978, CREST: CIA-RDP79T01184A000100030001-6, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC. 6. ^[https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/docs/CIA-RDP80T01355A000100140001-2.pdf STRATEGIC ARMS LIMITATIONS RELATED ACTIVITIES SUMMARY REPORT (SANITIZED)], June 1, 1980, CREST: CIA-RDP80T01355A000100140001-2, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC. 1 : Soviet Naval Aviation bases |
