It provides services to the North Ayrshire and East Ayrshire areas and is managed by NHS Ayrshire and Arran. HistoryWork on the hospital, which was commissioned to replace the Kilmarnock Infirmary, began on the site in August 1972 with completion expected in May 1977.[1] The contractor, Melville Dundas & Whitson, encountered difficulties with the water supply and ventilation systems[2] and the facility was only officially opened by George Younger, Secretary of State for Scotland, as Crosshouse Hospital in June 1984.[3] A new maternity unit, which replaced a similar facility at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine was opened in the grounds of the hospital in 2006.[4] In March 2012 it became University Hospital Crosshouse as a result of a partnership with the University of the West of Scotland.[5] ServicesThe hospital contains 645 staffed beds. It provides maternity services for the whole of NHS Ayrshire & Arran at the purpose-built Ayrshire Maternity Unit which has 51 inpatient beds, neonatal intensive and special care services. Paediatric services are also located at the hospital.[6] Resuscitation DVDIn 2009, NHS Ayrshire and Arran produced a DVD for Bliss, the special care baby charity, to help train parents in infant resuscitation.[7] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://api.parliament.uk/historic-hansard/commons/1980/dec/09/north-ayrshire-district-general-hospital|title=North Ayrshire District General Hospital|publisher=Hansard|date=9 December 1980|accessdate=22 January 2019}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2507&dat=19781129&id=8QI-AAAAIBAJ&sjid=dUkMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5506,6657982&hl=en|title=Board told to reject faulty £10m hospital|publisher=The Glasgow Herald |date=29 November 1978|accessdate=20 September 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.nhsaaa.net/media/5486/dialogue-2-issue-1.pdf|page=6|title=Happy Birthday NHSpublisher=Dialogue 2.0|accessdate=22 January 2019}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/stillbirth-rate-ayrshire-maternity-unit-2440471|title=Stillbirth rate at Ayrshire maternity unit rises|date=13 February 2009|publisher=Daily Record|accessdate=20 January 2019}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/anger-as-hospitals-are-given-new-names-out-of-the-blue.16777036 |title=Anger as hospitals are given new names 'out of the blue' |last=Wilson |first=Caroline |work=Evening Times |date=20 February 2012 |accessdate=9 July 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org/our_work/inspecting_and_regulating_care/hei_ayrshire__arran_reports/crosshouse_hospital_mar_13.aspx |title=Crosshouse Hospital Mar 13 |publisher=Healthcare Improvement Scotland |date=8 March 2013 |accessdate=9 July 2014}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.back2life.co.uk/news.php?id=12|title=Bliss Launch New Resuscitation DVD|publisher=Back to Life|date=20 November 2009|accessdate=20 September 2015}} External links
