It was established in 1975. In 2018, The University was ranked 300-350 in Asia University Ranking and +1000 in World University Ranking by Times Higher Education. HistoryThe University of Birjand was initially founded in 1975. In its 102nd meeting, the Council of Higher Education Development approved the establishment of higher education center in Birjand. In July 1975, Professor Mohammad Hasan Ganji was appointed as the first chancellor of the university to pursue its affairs. The academic activities of the University of Birjand (formerly named 'Technical College') started by admitting students in 1989 for an Associate degree in Electronics. Then, three departments namely, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were established. In 1991, the Institution of Higher Education was upgraded and renamed as the University of Birjand. After the Islamic Revolution, the University collaborated with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology for holding the higher education programs in line with the principles set by the Cultural Revolution Committee for Universities. During the next years, many academic faculties such as the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Literature and Humanities, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Faculty of Electronics, Power and Computer Sciences, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences were founded in the University of Birjand. Current Status of the University of BirjandCurrently, the University of Birjand includes 11 faculties and it is the largest and oldest academic centers in the eastern part of Iran. It is now home to more than 13000 students studying in more than 300 graduate and undergraduate educational programs with more than 360 full time and many other part-time academic members and around 500 working staff. CampusesThere are two main campuses within which all almost all departments and offices are located. Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Natural Resources and the Environmental Studies are located in Amirabad Site (Amirabad Campus, with total area of 206 hectare and total building area of 23900 m2) in the west of the city. The main campus is called Shokatabad (with total area of 650 hectare and total building area of 120500 m2), which encompasses all other faculties. Furthermore, Ferdows, Nehbandan, Sarbishe and Sarayan are cities near Birjand, where 4 satellite campuses of the University are located. Faculties and CollegesFaculty of SciencesThis Faculty is the first faculty of the University of Birjand which was founded in 1997. Currently there are around 1493 students in this faculty studying in BSc, MSc, and PhD programs in the educational fields of Chemistry, Physics, Mining and Biology. This faculty has 44 academic members and 35 Laboratories and Workshops. Faculty of Mathematics and StatisticsFaculty of Mathematics and Statistics was separated from the Faculty of Sciences. This Faculty has 28 academic members, 673 students in BSc, 98 students in MSc, and 29 students in PhD programs. The Department of Statistics of this faculty was established in 2002 and currently has 10 academic members and 200 students in BSc, 26 students in MSc and 4 students in PhD programs. In addition to BSc program, this department has admitted students in MSc in the fields of Pure Mathematics since 2000 and in Applied Mathematics since 2007. The department of Mathematics currently has 17 academic members, 280 students in BSc, 72 students in MSc and 25 students in PhD programs. Faculty of AgricultureFaculty of Agriculture was founded in 1979. Currently this Faculty has 4 departments and 7 programs in BSc, 14 programs in MSc and 2 programs in PhD. The faculty has also about 1369 students, 15 laboratories, 2 Greenhouse Research Stations, 1 Planthouse, 2 Gardens, Farming Research Stations and 2 Workshops with an educational environment about 40000 m2. Faculty of Natural Resources and Environmental StudiesThis faculty was separated from the Faculty of Agriculture in 2011. Currently, the faculty has 13 BSc and MSc programs with 357 students and 10 academic members in the departments of Environmental Studies, and Range and Watershed Engineering. Faculty of EngineeringFaculty of Engineering was founded in 1988 with 40 students. Currently, it has 1263 students in BSc, MSc, and PhD programs in Mining, Mechanic, and Civil Engineering. The faculty has 69 Laboratories and Workshops and 35 academic members. Faculty of Electrical and Computer EngineeringThis faculty has 4 departments including Computer, Electronics, Power, and Telecommunications Engineering. It has 15 undergraduate and post-graduate programs with 1569 students and 28 academic members. Faculty of Literature and HumanitiesFaculty of literature and Humanities was founded in 1990. The faculty has 9 departments including Departments of English, Geography, Islamic Studies, Law, Persian Language and Literature, Philosophy and Islamic Theology, Political Sciences, and Sociology. Currently, the faculty has 50 academic members and 1985 students. Faculty of ArtsThis Faculty was founded in 1989. Currently, it has 550 students studying in BA and MA programs of Archeology, Carpet and Crafts. The faculty also has 16 Laboratories and Workshops. Faculty of Physical Education and Sport SciencesThis Faculty was founded in 1995. It currently has 8 academic members and 300 students in BSc, 30 in MSc, and 10 in PhD programs. Faculty of Psychology and Educational SciencesThis Faculty was founded in 2009 and currently has 944 students and 23 academic members. It has 3 departments, namely Educational Sciences, Psychology, and Library and Information Sciences. Ferdows Undergraduate College (Satellite Campus)This college was founded in 2011. Currently it has 3 departments of Civil, Computer, and Electrical Engineering. The college has 4 academic members and 812 students. Sarayan Undergraduate College (Satellite Campus)This college was founded in 2011. Currently it has 4 departments of Agronomy, Environment, Irrigation Engineering, and Range and Watershed Management. The college has 4 academic members and 463 students. Sarbishe Undergraduate College (Satellite Campus)This college was founded in 2011. Currently it has 3 departments of Animal Sciences, Irrigation Engineering, Range and Watershed Management. The college has 159 students. Nehbandan Undergraduate College (Satellite Campus)This college was founded in 2012. Currently it has 3 departments of Mining Exploration, Mining Extraction, and Processing and Decorative Stones Engineering.
