The 2010 census found 1,469 people in the township.[3] GeographyLocated in the southern part of the county, it borders the following townships:
No municipalities are located in Van Buren Township. Name and historyStatewide, other Van Buren Townships are located in Hancock, Putnam, and Shelby counties. Van Buren Township was created in June 1838 and reduced by the formation of Franklin Township in June of the following year. It is probable that the township's first settlers arrived in 1818.[4]{{rp|591}} Over thirty years passed between the first settlement and the foundation of the first churches; the United Brethren and Methodist Episcopal churches were established in 1850.[4]{{rp|592}} Van Buren Township was named for Martin Van Buren, eighth President of the United States and President at the time of the township's creation.[5] GovernmentThe township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees. The current trustees are Tim Warner, David Delk, and Jed Smith, and the fiscal officer in Kent Thompson.[6] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://geonames.usgs.gov|accessdate=2008-01-31|title=US Board on Geographic Names|publisher=United States Geological Survey|date=2007-10-25}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://factfinder2.census.gov|publisher=United States Census Bureau|accessdate=2008-01-31|title=American FactFinder}} 3. ^{{cite web| url=http://factfinder.census.gov/bkmk/table/1.0/en/DEC/10_SF1/G001/0600000US3903761168| title=Geographic Identifiers: 2010 Demographic Profile Data (G001): Patterson township, Darke County, Ohio| publisher=U.S. Census Bureau, American Factfinder| accessdate=December 3, 2015}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|last= Wilson|first=Frazer Ells|title=History of Darke County, Ohio, from its earliest settlement to the present time, Vol. 1|url=https://archive.org/stream/historyofdarkeco01hoba#page/590/mode/2up|year=1914|publisher=Hobart Publishing Company|location=Milford, Ohio}} 5. ^{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=U4MUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA451#v=onepage&q&f=false | title=The History of Darke County, Ohio | publisher=W.
