Vesna Zmijanac ({{lang-sr-cyr|Весна Змијанац}}; {{IPA-sr|ʋêsna zmijǎːnats|sr}}; born 4 January 1957) is a Serbian Folk singer.[1]

Zmijanac began her career as a kafana singer and is now one of the most popular performers in the ex-Yugoslavia region, as well as a recognised sex-symbol, fashionista and gay icon. She is one of the best-selling Serbian singers of all time.

Early life

Vesna Zmijanac was born on 4 January 1957 in Nikšić, PR Montenegro, FPR Yugoslavia. Her father, Dušan, was from Sisak, present-day Croatia, and her mother, Kovina, was from Kraljevo, present-day Serbia. Her parents divorced when she was just a year old as they believed that they were too young to be married. Subsequently, Zmijanac was raised by her maternal grandmother, Natalija. She spent part of her childhood living in Vienna, Austria.

Career

Zmijanac started singing soon after graduating from middle school. She began singing in kafane, where she was soon discovered by the famous folk singer, Šaban Šaulić. He helped to launch her career.

In 1979, she released her first single, "Hvala Ti Za Sve". Her debut album, "Ljubi Me, Ljubi, Lepoto Moja", was released in 1982.

She has appeared in several films, hosted her own talk shows and participated in reality TV series such as Philippines (2009) and Farma (2016).

In 2000, she published her autobiography, "Kad Zamirišu Jorgovani", named after her 1988 hit duet with Dino Merlin.

Personal life

Zmijanac's first marriage was to Miroljub Aranđelović Kemiš, Serbian accordion player and composer. Allegedly, the reason for their divorce was Zorica Brunclik, who later married Aranđelović.

Her second husband was Vlada Jovanović, former marketing chief of PGP RTS. They were married in 1986. Zmijanac gave birth to their daughter, Nikolija on 19 October 1989 in Zagreb, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. They divorced soon after Nikolija's birth.

Nikolija is also a well known singer. Through her daughter' relationship with Relja Popović, Zmijanac has a granddaughter, named Rea (b. 26 September 2016).
