It has an area of 12.40 km² and a volume of 340 million m³. Its associated hydroelectric plant Ciungetu, has a maximum power output of 510 MW, using an altitude difference of about {{convert|800|m}}. The dam and the hydro plant were built between 1965 and 1972. It is the second largest hydro plant in Romania, after Iron Gates. See also
