It is endemic to the Vilcabamba Mountains of Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland. The Ayacucho thistletail was at one time considered to be a subspecies of the Vilcabamba thistletail.
