WAJD (1390 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Gainesville, Florida It is owned by Gillen Broadcasting Corporation and airs a smooth jazz format. In Gainesville and adjacent communities, programming can also be heard on FM translator W255CV at 98.9 MHz. WAJD calls itself "Smooth Jazz 98.9" using the frequency of the FM translator.

The studios and offices are on SW 24th Avenue in Gainesville. WAJD's transmitter is off NE 16th Avenue.[1]

History

1960s

1962

Originally country WPUP, what is now WAJD first signed on on May 31.

1963

WPUP is sold to WUWU Radio, Inc. which changes the callsign to WUWU adopting the "Woo-Woo" name but retaining the country format.

1970s

1971

WUWU is sold to Olivia broadcasting which changes the callsign to WAKA and flips its format to beautiful music adopting the slogan "AM 1390, The Only One To Turn To."

1973

WAKA becomes a Top 40/Oldies hybrid.

1974

WAKA flips back to beautiful music.

1978

WAKA is sold to Nabco, Inc. and calling itself 14K, the station modifies its format slightly to Middle Of the Road (MOR).

1980s

1980

WAKA flips formats again to Top 40/New Wave.

1981

WAKA becomes adult contemporary WKGR under new owners, Kent Gainesville Radio.

1983

WKGR is sold to the Sunshine Wireless company which changes calls to WMGI "Magic 1390" with a Jazz/Urban Contemporary format. Sunshine already owned WYKS and added WKGR to have an A.M. station in the market.

1986

1390 once again becomes country & taking the WDVH calls after the format & calls leave 980 kHz (which became WLUS).

1987

1390 is sold to the current owner, Gillen Broadcasting with WYKS for $1.9 million. 1390's callsign changes finally settle down with it becoming the current WAJD with a Top 40 format only to flip formats again that same year to all news "Newsradio 1390".

1988

WAJD adopts a heavy metal format.

1990s

1990

WAJD simulcasts WYKS.

2000s

2001

WAJD flips to the Radio Disney format.

2009

WAJD goes silent on July 7.

2010s

2010

WAJD back on the air with Motown & classic R&B hits.

2013

WAJD changes its format from urban oldies to talk.

2014

WAJD is once again silent.

2015

WAJD returns to the air with talk.

2016

WAJD changed formats from talk to smooth jazz.
