{{Usul al-fiqh}}Wasat, also called wasatiyyah ({{lang|ar|وسطية}}) is the Arabic word for best, middle, centered, balanced. In the Islamic context, it refers to the "middle way" or "moderation", a justly balanced way of life, avoiding extremes and experiencing things in moderation.[1][2][3]

Wasatiyyah in scripture

In Quran

{{Quote|And thus we have made you a wasat (moderate) community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.|Al-Baqara, 2: 143}}{{Quote|"The best among them"(Awsatauhom) said: “Did I not tell you: why do you not say: Insha’ Allah (If Allah will)).|Al-Qalam 68:28}}

In hadiths

{{Quote|Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “The religion (of Islam) is easy, and whoever makes the religion a rigour, it will overpower him. So, follow a middle course (in worship); if you can’t do this, do something near to it and give glad tidings and seek help (of Allah) at morn and at dusk and some part of night”.| Bukhari:39}}{{quote|Narrated `Aisha: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little."|Sahih Bukhari, chapter: 68, Hadith no: 6020}}{{Quote|The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once asked a companion: "(Is it true) that you fast all day and stand in prayer all night?" The companion replied that the report was indeed true. The Prophet then said: "Do not do that! Observe the fast sometimes and also leave (it) at other times. Stand up for prayer at night and also sleep at night. Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you and your wife has a right over you." | Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Hadith 127}}{{Quote|The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately. . .Always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course, whereby you will reach your target (of paradise)." | Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Hadith 470}}{{Quote|The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise (i.e., no one enters paradise only through his good deeds)." The Prophet's companions asked: "Not even you?" The Prophet replied: "Not even myself, unless God bestows His favor and mercy on me. So be moderate in your religious deeds and do what is within your ability. None of you should wish for death, for if he is a doer of good, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to God." | Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Hadith 577}}{{Quote|Ibn Abbas reported Allah’s Messenger (May Allah exalt his mention) as saying, “A good manner of conduct and moderation are a 25th part of Prophethood.”|Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4776}}{{quote|Hakam bin Hazan Qulafi narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, O mankind! You will not be able to do all that you are ordered to do. But follow moderate means and give good news.|Ahmad 17856, Abu Dawood 1098, Sahihul Jami '7871 }}
