He has been listed among one America's top ten designers.[1][2] He is also an activist for social causes, the environment, and gay rights, being a gay person himself.[3] In 2014, Government of India conferred upon him its fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.[4] CareerRodricks was born into a Goan catholic family. He grew up in Mumbai and attended St. Michael's High School in Mahim. After completing school, he took a graduate diploma in catering. However, he did not pursue that profession but moved to fashion designing.[4] Rodricks was the first India designer to be invited to IGEDO (the world's largest garment fair);and the first Indian designer to open the Dubai Fashion Week.He is a fellow design member of the Fashion Design Council of India.[5]He converted his 450 year old home to a museum as an homage to Evolution of Goan fashion.[6]
PersonalWendell Rodricks is openly gay in a country where same-sex activity was illegal. He is married to Jerome Marrel in a civil ceremony in Paris. He met Marrel in Oman, in 1988, thanks to a friend, who set them up. Rodricks credits Marrel for his success as a fashion designer, in his biography, The Green Room. [10] ActivismRodricks has written a column in the Goa-based monthly Goa Today, where he has often raised issues of social concerns and the environment. [11] He has also spoken out against the IRFW (India Resort Fashion Week) as it "damages the environment". [12] He also recently started a helpline for the LGBTQ community, along with Ruby Almeida, the co-chair of Global Network of Rainbow Catholics.[13] He also petitioned against the demolition of a church in Colvale, Goa.
