Also known as the William P. Reeves House or the Clark House, the house was built by William Pouder Reeves and his brother Peter Miller Reeves on {{convert|400|acre|km2}}, purchased for $5500. Both brothers married daughters of Valentine DeVault. William and Peter were both trained as carpenters, and traveled through North Carolina taking commissions for important buildings, such as the Guilford Courthouse. The exceptional carvings and woodwork at Wheatland were undertaken by William.
