It intentionally emphasizes the normalcy of different family arrangements.[1] ControversyThe book was at the center of a controversy in the state of Massachusetts in the United States when a number of parents objected to their children being exposed to it in school, claiming that it was intended to promote a "homosexual agenda".[2] Parents David and Tonia Parker filed suit against the Lexington school district to have their children exempted from reading the book in class. The Parkers were ultimately unsuccessful, with the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals finally dismissing their lawsuit, noting that "the mere fact that a child is exposed on occasion in public school to a concept offensive to a parent’s religious belief does not inhibit the parent from instructing the child differently".[3] The US Supreme Court declined to hear the case.[4] References{{Portal|Children's literature}}1. ^{{cite book|last1=Doiron|first1=Ray|last2=Asselin|first2=Marlene|title=Literacy, libraries and learning|year=2005|publisher=Pembroke Publishers Limited|isbn=978-1-55138-196-1|page=51}} {{LGBT-book-stub}}{{child-picture-book-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0215/p02s01-ussc.html|title=New flash point in sex ed: gay issues|last=Llana|first=Sara Miller|date=Feb 15, 2006|work=Christian Science Monitor|accessdate=25 August 2010}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://michiganmessenger.com/814/parents-religious-beliefs-cant-exempt-students-from-school-teaching-materials-us-court-says|title=Parents’ religious beliefs can’t exempt students from school teaching materials, U.S. court says|last=Brayton|first=Ed|date=6 February 2008|work=Michigan Messenger|accessdate=25 August 2010}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.milforddailynews.com/state/x282364097/Public-school-lawsuit-runs-out-of-federal-appeals|title=Public school lawsuit runs out of federal appeals|last=Murphy|first=Ian|date=Oct 7, 2008|work=Milford Daily News|accessdate=25 August 2010}} 3 : Children's books with LGBT themes|American picture books|1997 children's books |
