He was born the fifth but second surviving son of John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair. He was a commissioner for Ayrshire in the Parliament of Scotland for 1702–07. He was one of the Scottish representatives to the first Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1708, then MP for Clackmannanshire from 1708 to 1710, for Wigtown Burghs 1722–1727 and Wigtownshire 1727–1741. He was appointed joint muster master general for Scotland in 1706 and a commissioner of the Equivalent 1707–19. He also served as a captain and lieutenant-colonel in the 3rd Foot Guards (Scots Guards) in 1710–14. He was Sheriff of Clackmannan from 1708 to his death. He died in 1744, having married his cousin Penelope, suo jure Countess of Dumfries. They had 6 sons and 2 daughters.
